lol i got it wrong, but now that i go back and think about it.
BEDMAS, simple as it gets, division comes before multiplication even after the brackets have been done.

It's the fact that a/b(c+d) is equal to a/(bc+bd).
If I gave you 48/(9x+3x) would it equal 48/x(9+3)? Or 48/12x? and if x equalled 2 you would have 48/(12*2)=2?
lol work in the morning gtg, will be funny to see how this goes.
Edit, tried on my TI89 TI and got 288 so you may be right. I suppose this is why no one knows. The TI are notorious for working like crap woth brackets though so I'm still gonna stick with my 2.Last edited by Joker; 04-08-2011, 02:42 AM.

you don't distribute first, you need to calculate the parentheses first, then the /*, then the +-Originally posted by Joker View PostPretty sure in this format "48/2(9+3)" it will equal 2. You would use the distributive law to adjust the equation before really "doing the math".
a/b(c+d) would be distributed out to a/(bc+bd) = 48/(18+6)= 48/24 = 2
so its exactly how i described it; 48/2*(9+3) -> 48/2*12 -> 24*12 -> 288
my 400$ calculcator will back me up on that
no one is going to school me on calculus, i do this shiit all day, its all i ever do in engineering

even if its "layed" out poorly, doesn't change how you should calculate itOriginally posted by Joker View PostIt's just written poorly, The way it's layed out I would say 2 but if it were written propperly (48÷2)(9+3) it would be 288.
its more like 48/2*(9+3) -> 48/2*12 -> 24*12 -> 288
its layed out like how you would type it in a calculator,
like the one i use in engineering classes
