What causes this?

    The shop that was doing my car sent the turbo out to get rebuilt/balanced and they cleaned everything all up. It did look like that.

    It's unfortunate, have to keep a very close eye on things I guess.

    You must have bead blasted yours, because that's the way they should look, all rustly and sh1t. They both cracked in the same place, my money is on heat cycling right at the turbine throat (with more emphasis on the hot end of it). They could have made that flange a little thicker or used a better grade of cast iron (or used steel). I bet the area under the flange is the first to start glowing when you are flogging the car.

    A fellow jdm subie owner just removed his turbo yesterday/today. And look what he found...





    He said it has 187,000km's on it, mine only had 79,000km's :| Looks to be a very similar crack.

    due to the fact that it is clearly the exhaust side of the turbo, yesh that does support a great amount of weight.

    My car has had an hks turboback for the past year or so... I think it was when I was doing some donuts in some deep(ish) snow the cold snow+extreme heat from turbo=crack, a long with the age of it and any stress.

    Stock exhaust is heavy (at least on a Skyline it is). On a R32 GTS-T Skyline it's around 20-24kg or so when I last weighed the stock exhaust. Then add lateral G forces when cornering. Titanium exhaust is roughly around 4kg or so (might be slighly heavier, depending on diameter, etc). Pushing on end / tip of exhaust with foot or similar shows you how far it can swing.

    It is the exhaust side.

    Oil was lost, bearings were spun, engine was removed, new engine and turbo was swapped in, and it is now running great.

    The exhaust is secured no differently than stock...

    he did say it was the exhaust side, so I didn't look @ it much.

    It is compressor side as you say. However, I have seen some exhaust housing damage due to the exhaust swinging around.

    That didn't blow your engine.

    Looks like there may have not been enough support on you exhaust system. Too much weight on the flange. Heating up and cooling down so much, weakened it, and it cracked.

    This turbo was on the car, and it cracking/blowing the seal made the engine develop a knock due to lack of oil. I swapped in a longblock and new turbo. Car is running great now. Just wondering what would of caused the housing to crack like that.

    thats the compressor housing of a TD05, the exhaust swinging would have no affect on that, as that is clamped to the center section by a v-band.

    so was this the turbo from the old motor? or did the new motor blow up?

    Lost most of my oil on the highway. By the time I got home it was knocking. Positive the seal went too, all my oil went out my exhaust pipe.

    I checked out my exhaust, it's not swinging or hanging. It's all tight.
