  • 600 wheel - GT4088R or T04Z?

Say everything is built already to handle the power, the only thing I'd like to see now is which would be a better fit for an *as reliable as it can get* 600 wheel. Any input/discussion is more than welcome.

if your going for 600 whp, id recommend a gt35R. a t04z is great as well, but for only 600 id go with the gt35 for spool.

A 35r won't do 600whp on pump. Maybe 550 but even that is really pushing it.

I really like the 40r and it should be able to do 650+ with pump with meth.

I can't wait for the gtx4088r to be released

true you cannot do 600 with a 35 on pump.

you can however do 598 WHP on pump and meth... or atleast i can...

Is there any question to whether the T04 could handle that?

and the GT42, waaaay too big?

600whp is possible on pump (94) and not so rich tune but water meth would help. Reliability would not be there however. Some of the best tuners say black smoke is bad tuning so I'm guessing a rich tune is too much safety. I heard there was such thing as too much fuel "washing the walls" but I don't know if that's true.

On another note, you're friend looking to make this power (I hope it's not you cause if you can't afford to get one easily, anything more than stock would be a bad idea on a tight budget), does he understand the costs involved in making lots of power? A new 5L mustang can get that with less than $8,000 but not a GTR.

This is just me trying to broaden my knowledge bank with these cars. Little by little I'm trying to ask the questions now so down the road when I have the wallet, I will know exactly what I'm doing rather than throwing away money on failed attempts and misinformed decisions.

Im going down my 'future' parts list, 95% of the stuff I'm familiar with and confident with, but there are a few things left that Im not 100% on, mainly being the big single. I feel with the T04 youre paying for the HKS logo, but if it can handle 600 wheel without being too stretched out or under used, It would be a good fit.

On straight pump (91) my car easily made 573. if you up the boost and run 94 600+ would be easy.

the 4088r uses much newer turbo designs than the old T04Z.

remember, it is just a ball bearing t04r and that came out around the same time as the T88.

Almost just as important as turbo selection is exhaust manifold selection.

If you went with a T04Z and had a manifold built specifically for this purpose their are some benefits! First off you could do a full twin-scroll setup. This is ideal and reduces lag without negatively effecting top end! Also once you have your manifold and wastegates you can swap to almost any T4 Flanged twin-scroll turbo including GT35R's GT40R's and many other great turbos. Downsides for this type of setup are expense both in manifold design and also now requiring 2 wastegates for proper twin-scroll. And also space limitations, these manifolds are special and can take up more space then other setups.

If you were going to use the GT35R I would do the same setup we have done on Supra's. We use a Garrett GT3582R with a TiAL Stainless Steel exhaust housing. These turbos and manifolds are by far the best single-scroll setup you can build. They require only 1 wastegate in most situations (Rotarys still should use 2 normally) they are compact, and super reliable! Turbo's are held to the manifold and down-pipe by leak-free V-Band's. They never loosen like typical T4 flange style bolts, and make turbo install and removal much easier! Downsides to this setup are again expense of the custom manifolds and the upgraded TiAL turbo's. Also turbo selection can be limited as well. The flange TiAL uses for the GT35R's is backwards compatible with GT28 and GT30R's as well, but unfortunately a GT3582R with 1.0AR is the largest turbo that this flange currently supports (to my knowledge) On the other side of the fence the smallest turbo that TiAL supports is the GT42R. This may be a little to large for your current goals. This flange is also compatable with TiAL's GT45R's as well.

Someday TiAL will release back-ends for GT37R's and GT40R's, but until that day we are slightly limited.

I drove my gtr with a 4088R for a year or so. Great turbo, but upgraded to the 4094 and there is a big difference.. Boost threshold pushed back about 200rpm, but where the 4088 runs out of puff at 1.7 bar or so, the 4094 continues to make power up to 2.5 bar. Get the 4094.

Hey kev, do you have any dyno sheets of the two of them? Would be very interested to see the difference.
