Whats the coldest you have started your car with the surface gaps. I agree about the heat range. These things are very hard to foul. Unless it's below 0...Originally posted by kismetcapitan View Postnot to keep preaching, but one of the beauties of running surface gap is, although they come with a heat range of 9, surface gap plugs inherently have NO heat range - the plug's outer electrode matches the cylinder head temp exactly, so you don't need to worry about running too hot a plug if you crank the boost, or deal with fouling if you're running a cold racing plug while just driving around town.

hey I recently developed stuttering after 5000 rpm after the elbow on my twin turbo pipe blew off so i pulled out my plugs and they are ngk iridium BKR5EIX-11 so what I'm wondering is could the plugs have failed and caused an overboost which caused the elbow to blow off just wondering if anyone experienced anything like this before

Unfortunately, you can't narrow the gap on those to help keep the fire alive if your ign. system isn't up to the task. Any resistance in those? The AutoLites are very low to also help coils that are a little weak.

My cold start wasnt setup very well was a lot of the problem. Once I switched plugs it would start anyway but if I tried to long with the surface gaps it would soak the plugs and then it didnt stand a chance.

don't want to thread jack but quick question about heat ranges....
When would it be considered necessary to up the range to 8 from 7?

that's interesting; I've never had any problems starting...but I do have those ignition upgrades. My car's in storage at my parent's house at the moment, and my mom's been starting the car once a week to keep the battery charged and just to keep the fluids flowing. My mom is 65 and completely incapable of anything mechanical, so it must still be working fine!

I ran those surface gaps and they worked good once the car is running but starting wasnt as good as conventianal plugs. On the plus side they ran good for 2 summers without switching them but eventually starting was a huge pain. Never a miss or any ignition break-up and I ran them up to 21psi with a gt4088r and water/meth.
In the end I'm not going to bother buying them again. coppers are so cheap and everytime you switch them it gives you an idea of what was happening inside your engine.Last edited by Super_Dude; 09-18-2011, 05:20 PM.

I got sick of misfires due to blowing out the spark. I got sick of fouling plugs. I got sick of worrying about heat range, and being nervous about tips breaking off. So I went with these:

I have Splitfire coilpacks and an HKS ignition amp, which does seem to help. Not many people seem to have followed my lead on this, but I will say that I've run four years without even having to think once about my ignition, or having to change plugs, and I've never misfired since. Since they have no delicate electrode, they just need a good hard scrubbing every year or two. Surface gap is THE way to go.

So you gapped them to 80 thou.? As in .080" and not .8mm? If so, that is WAY to big. In imperial you want 25 thou. or .025" in metric you want .8mm.
I run AutoLite AR3923 copper race plugs in my car and will light the fire up to 1.3bar and 600hp gapped at .8mm. Cheap as hell too, about $3.70 each.

yea, just typo error. so should i go higher or lower? just misfiring a little

hello, just a quick question... i just replace my plugs to ngk copper BKR7E with .08mm gap some times it will misfire on wot but not always should i regap the plugs bigger or tighter? thank you

Racing plug ( the real ones, not the ricer ones) cost over $60 each but it's uber tough to foul and they are very strong.Originally posted by DarkCaporaL View Post70$ for one spark plug what the hell was he trying to sell you.
A set of 6 nismo plugs are around $150.
Iridium are overrated. I fouled more of those than I did copper Vtips. I use NGK coppers, $30 per set gapped at 1mm for max powah!Last edited by Bruizer; 06-23-2011, 09:07 PM.
