  • F*ck, GTR is leaking coolant like crazy! HELP !

    the story goes...

i was driving the other night like any other night, some spirited bursts nothing crazy. then i stop at a light beside my friend and he notices that my engine bay is steaming like crazy out from behind my drivers side front wheel.

quickly i pull off and pop the hood. Other then the loud hissing and puddle that's quickly accumulating beneath my car, we can't see anything because it's dark out and the dinky flashlight i have isn't good enough. Fearing the worst he goes home grabs his trailer and we get it back to my driveway.
    Today i started the investigation.

Check Dip stick. everything looks normal filled to right spot, whew!
    Check Rad.....Empty

I start to fill the rad with water trying to narrow down the source and it starts pissing out from behind the engine, and i don't mean a slight drip. it's coming out as fast as it's going in. The problem is that it's impossible to see exactly where it's coming out of. There are too many hoses/ everything else blocking the view.

So from what i can tell. It's the back of the engine, above the bell housing, there are 3-4 small lines (oil?) right on top of where it seems to be coming from. I'm starting to think the head gasket but hoping it's not. I was told my engine has a metal head gasket installed. (omori refresh)

Does anyone have and insight to where it may be leaking from, connection loose? bolt popped out? hose burned through? anything other than a bad gasket?

    this is a bummer.

My bet is one of the coolant lines under the plennum.

do those lines wrap around the back of the head?

if it's coming out from the passenger side, there's also a coolant drain bolt behind your rear turbo on the block...could have backed out

Only lines I know that go behind the head are the heater hoses. Check those for leaks.

There is one coolant line, but I can't remember. It's a hard line though, so if that guy is leaking i'd be impressed.

Check that drain bolt though. It's right on the rear side of hte motor, passenger side.

i thought the drain bolt is under the turbos, this leak it defiantely higher and is right at the very back of the head/block.

the heater hoses that i could see were 3/4" round, they were definately not leaking. there are 3-5 hard lines that go back there and they all seem to change to rubber for a section, i can't tell if maybe one of the ends popped off or not. i took the coil cover off but it didn't help.

i'm at work so i'm trying to get ideas about the problem first. plus i'm leaving for vacation tomorrow so i wont disassemble anything till next wed.

is it possible for a head gasket to crack so much that the coolant would just pour out, not just slowly drip? also my oil is clean and not contaminated. if the head gasket was the problem wouldn't the oil and coolant have mixed?

                  there is a line
four inches long, right at the back of the head, you wont see it with the intake plenum on. it connects to the hard line running to the turbos.

I have replaced three of those before, they have a tendency of exploding with the heat soak.

This line failed on my car about 2 weeks after I put the engine in. You need to have the transmission or (preferably, and easier the intake plenum off.

I just blocked it SOMEHOW until my trans died, and I fixed it when I replaced the trans.

There are at least 4, maybe 5 coolant lines/connections at the right, rear of the block. Heater hoses, turbo feed, AAC...

As mcfly said, take the plenum off, do it right.

take the Intake the plenum off and get a bike tire air pump to pressure the cooling system and you will find the leak in 2 mins...
