  • GTR won't start, any advice?

I went to start my car this afternoon and it wouldn't start.
When I turn the key it makes a screeching sound like when you try to start the car when it's already on.
I'm thinking it may be the starter motor?

Any advice on what you may think it is?

Dunno a whole lot about GTR's yet...but sounds like maybe the starter drive, as opposed to the actual motor.

Could be the solenoid that engages the starter gear with the flywheel. If the starter spins before the gear is engaged, and then the solenoid kicks in, it could end up as you've described.

Not sure if this is makes a difference, but the clutch fan spins when turning the key.

If your fan is spinning, the the crank is spinning, however, the bendix may be in bad shape if it sounds like a coffee grinder. You may need a starter rebuild...

We have managed to eliminate the starter as the issue.
Looks like it could be the fuel pump. When the key is turned to "on" the fuel pump does not make it's start-up sound. Will investigate some more today.

Screeching noise should be the starter... No fuel pump makes that noise! My truck does that sometimes. Roll it back and forward a litle try it again. Check that starter bolts are tight also.

                Daryl,

You have a tomei fuel setup so you should be able to get a fuel pressure gauge set up easily. That will tell you if you're getting fuel right away.

Maybe theres a blockage in the fuel filter. Check with a fuel pressure gauge or get one and plug it with the tomei fuel pump. If theres a blockage at the filter though there still maybe a pressure.

Its possible its not the fuel pump though cause you have a screeching sound when trying to start it. Even without fuel the engine should turn over easily and not make any foul noises. Does the clutch fan turn smoothly when turning the key?

If you can, pull out the starter and look at the teeth on both the starter gear and flywheel. I'm not sure what kind of placement/mounting they have on skylines but shouldn't be too hard. Just remember to disconnect the battery before doing anything starting/charging wise. I know a lot of GMs have issues where the magnets in the starter don't draw the gear back from the flywheel, but in those cases the engine starts. It could very well be that the gear isn't engaging properly too.

Thought so. I mostly work on Fords and GMs, figures 'cause they break down most often

why not just get someone to push the car and try starting it. that will rule any of the cranking system problem out. then go from there. if your starter gear is chewed of your engine might still turn over but won't turn fast enough to get it going.
so just get in there and get someone to roll the car fast enough and let go the clutch.

To rule out fuel problem undo the main fuel line going into the fuel rail and turn the ignition on. yo should get constant fuel from that line. use a container of some kind under the line.

Well, I have found that the Jedi mind power method actually does work.
Today the car started up after I told it to via telepathy.
I have no idea why it starts now and didn't for the past week.
Took it for a drive and everything works fine.
The screeching sound may have been a figment of my imagination. Or perhaps the entire past week of trying to start the car everyday was just a delusion.

Anyways, thanks for all the suggestions guys, I know I can always count of GTRC's to come up suggestions that I never thought of!
