Drop gas tank when cutting rear fenders?

I am cutting my rear arches to fit rear over fenders. For the driver side near the gas cap, is it dangerous to catch with the gas tank still attached to the car? Should I remove the gas tank and filler neck away from the fender before cutting? Or is it completely necessary?
