So I was detailing under my car on the lift today and found this. What is it??

R33 battery vent cover?

Its on the inside of the drivers side quarter panel. Looks like its meant to hold something.

Maybe the original owner smuggled things around and this was his secret compartment. Just kidding. Looks interesting though.

Looks sorta like an air vent to ventilate the trunk? But it's just sorta... there... Nothing to vent into. Got me stumped, man!

Funny thing is that it doesn't look after market. looks like a place to put something, like a little plastic box for who knows what. If any others R33 owners see this post, go out and check under your car, see if you have it.

Maybe it's a cover/protector for the trunk vent. The R32's have a vent in this location... Almost all cars have vents somewhere to help air flow when the heater/ac fan is blowing and to keep windows from blowing out when the doors or trunk is closed.

fsm says 'diffuser' but I've always considered it to be a vent also.

is there a rubber flap behind it? looks like what everyone else is saying, a vent. it looks factory too.

It is in fact a vent! Yes there is a rubber flap in there as well! It's there to help evacuate moisture and smells from the trunk and cabin via the parcel tray vents along the bottom of the rear window!
