    head rebuild questions on pricing

Just wanted to ask for some first hand experiences when rebuilding a head.

I plan to have my head rebuilt here in bc by a shop. I have not sourced a shop yet but was hoping to get an idea of what to expect for a decent quote.

Im looking to have my head rebuilt to factory specs with new parts.
My plan is to install a set of tomei pon's at the same time.

i will be removing and installing the head myself to save on labour.

Thanks guys. There is a build on the way.

Your probably looking at anywhere from 500-1500. I know you probably want a pretty close number but it really depends on the shape of your head and how much work they will be doing (machining, reaming, grinding etc). For the amount that you would pay to have it brought back to stock specs, I would definitely say spent the extra cash and get some better hardware, also a porting job.

Then add the cost of cams, machining to get the big lobes to pass, porting, gears, titanium parts, Stud kits and your now well on your way to $4 or $5,000

    poncams A , B and R require no machining , they increase duration , not lift !

What ever happened to to DIY ?

If you take off the head yourself you can -

clean - decoke and polishthe chambers .
port match the ports with the manifolds.
replace valve guides , seals , valves and lap them in by hand .
do a second cutback on the valves .
check the combustion chamber capacities and adjust so they match .
remove all rough surfaces and polish ( its aluminium and easy to do ).
Install your poncams and adjust shims .
Replace studs/bolts with an ARP set

WHy do you need to pay someone to do that ?

Things you do need to have done professionally are :-

check for flat and resurface the head face
tank the head for a really clean finish
x-ray the head if your paranoid about cracks (but if it doesnt have problems before teardown this probably doesnt need doing!

Only cost is parts and some of your spare time . Info on techniques is all over the web.

Playing with heads and timing have always been something i dont want to do because i dont have the space, shop, time, and patience to do it right.

If i had my own garage or workshop at my house i would be all over this job as time wouldnt matter, but i dont have that luxury.

So for the meantime until i have a garage i am pretty cornered into paying a shop to do any larger work that i just cant.
I dont belive i am mechanically retarded, im just lacking in a few departments.

I would budget $750 for a stock rebuild. PonCam's will be drop in while the head is apart anyways.
