    Please help me understand oil cooler.

    Okay so I have a relocation kit on my car...

    I then bought, the thermostat plate thinking I would be all-set


    but from what I understand, I actually need to put my thermostat plate over my existing relocation to make it fit?

    That little drawing is pretty much spot on.

    The only worry for me is depending on how it's setup, some have the oil filter
    before the cooler and some after the cooler. I personally would not run with
    the filter before the cooler. But if I already had all the parts, I would consider
    just getting a cheap relocation plate and just adding a filter after the cooler.
    Yes, running 2 oil filters, with most relocation filter you have the option of
    changing the tread pitch and size for the oil filter, giving you the option to
    choose from most oil filter out there. If you check you'll see that price for them
    can vary a LOT, chance is you can get 2 good filters from a reputable company,
    for less than 15$, hell I could get 2 wix for less than 10$ but 15$ is nice
    number that's not unrealistic for most people. Now what is 15$ in filters for the
    most important filtration system on your car. Hell some people probably spend
    more on just 1 filter. lol

    But that's just me and I was already thinking of running dual filter. Considering
    that most of the time with SYNTHETIC oil, you'll be changing the oil because the
    filter isn't doing his job anymore. And let's face it with a good oil cooler, the oil
    shouldn't see the real high temp where it start to really deteriorate.

    P.S. My system will also have about twice the oil capacity that it originally had.

    If you check how most oil filters work, you'll see that as they get dirty they
    have a little valve that let's more and more oil bypass them, so less and less oil
    get's filtered. But I think I went off topic enough.

    I run an HKS oil cooler and a seperate Grex oil filter relocation unit , oil to cooler to filter then back to engine

    So I found a little tutorial.. I thought I needed 3 hose plug but it seems like the thermostat plate can fit just on top of the relocation plate.

    I scratched my head well enought for this so at this point all I want is * simple install*. loL! you can always do better,always, but you gotta stop and ask yourself, is it really necessary?

    All I wanted to know or make sure is that I had to screw my thermostat grex over my relocation plate or do something else.

    I feel as though that would cause more bottle-necks in the system than needed. Already, adding an oil-cooler to this system increases oil pressure in the system (more twists and turns etc) and thats seen with -10 lines. I'd be worried about obstructing flow at high rpms. Think about the fact that you're also moving 1.5-3 more litres of oil depending on the size of your cooler and length of hose. I understand as well, that the pressure inside the motor is untouched in any way, but simply extracting oil from the equation, and putting it through bottle-necks before returning to the motor.. i'd search for the simplest/cleanest route - 1 filter, either before or after, shortest amount of hose, and no 90's..

    good point here marc.. lenght of hose.. I think I slightly fail at this but at the same time lots of kit mount in the passenger bumper so that require long amount of hose anyways.

    The oil pressure in the system is actually created by the bearing clearances on the crank etc , the oil cooler matrix and extra volume is not an issue , in fact it's beneficial to increase the engines oil capacity.

    The pressure increase from having a cooler is because the oil runs cooler . If you actually cut an oil line and insert a tansparent fitting and watch how fast it circulates through the lines it's suprisingly slow .

    My HKS oil cooler setup uses -14 size fittings and hose , it's huge. You want slow moving volume passing through the cooler to actually give it a chance for the cooler to do it's job , oil is a very dense liquid and holds alot of heat .

    What Cortexx said is bang on.

    I'm sure most of you already knows this, the thermostatic thermostat is close when the oil is too cold to give it a chance to
    warm up, and then GRADUALLY open's went the oil get over a certain point. (You absolutely do not want to trow tick cold
    oil in your system when every thing is suppose to be at temp, over cooling your oil is a bad thing, you'll get pressure, but
    not the flow necessary for proper lubrication.)

    And I'm not recommending 2 oil filters, simply stating that I would want one after the oil cooler so bad, I would be willing to
    add an extra one, if the setup I had would only filter before the oil cooler.

    If you where hit or hit something, there's not much protecting the oil cooler on most setup I see, so it wouldn't take much
    to get to it, and where would the debris go if the oil cooler was hit. I know worst case scenario but still possible.

    PPL need to realize that pressure isn't flow, but rather resistance to flow.

    PPL w/ high blood pressure have shitty circulation.

    There's an analogy for ya.

    Flow is determined through tje pressure differentials of the high pressure volme to the low pressure volume.
