R32 GTR power steering rack removal

So I have a huge leak its puddling in the inner tie rod boots and leaking out where the shaft protrudes thru the boot. The boot is full of fluid. How much time should I estimate being down too re and re a steering rack? I heard a rumor the subframe needed to be dropped?

you dont need to drop the subframe. The hardest part will be separating the the rack from the steering column. The splines that connect the two usually become seized and hard to separate. I would estimate a good 4-5 hours if your doing a backyard job, maybe 2-3 if you have a hoist. Make sure you have an impact gun handy.

Bumping a slightly old thread to ask how the hell you get this part seperated.

Very easy to do! This seriously might take 1 1/2 hr to do if your by yourself. Extremely straight forward

Well, I see two places where I could remove it, the top part that has the spline connected to the steering shaft, or the cv joint that's closer to the rack. Never done it before so I'm nervous about what one to do

Well if your going to replace it and keep replace the ends with new ones then it won't really matter:

    1. The night before you plan on doing it go underneath the car and drench it in wd40.
    2. Make sure you have the right tools for the job( line wrench(12mm I think), a decent pry bar, and a socket set)
    3. Make sure you loosen the bolt on the Part that is holding on the spline. You will need to work this part a bit so be patient and make sure not to damage any of the parts. If you damage the steering column part that could suck.
    4. There should be a pwr steering line comin off of it heading towards the pump.
    5. Once you know the lines are disconnected then start loosening the other bolts. There should be 2 on the back of the rack about 30 inches apart.
    6. Before you take them off fully decide if you are going to keep or change the ends. If your going to put the new rack on with other ones try and count the threads in so your steering won't be too far off if not exact.

This should take care of the entire process unless your wondering about bleeding the system because then that's another story as well. If you need to know that I can shoot that off too. If you get stuck please feel free to me and I'll even shoot you a number you can text me at so you don't get stuck

Too me 2 mins to separate the steering shaft but my engine was out lmao. It can be done with the enging in by removing the bolts from the steering bushing near the fire wall with a universal and extension.

It shouldn't take long but realistically to get everything perfect with removal and a re install at most it should take 1 1/2 hours to do it and have everything perfect
