    Discuss: Drive-Clean

Who here has had the pleasure (and hopefully not the surprise) of getting your car emissions tested.

I for one just had my GTR snorkled today at Canadian Tire. They entered all the information into the computer and then tested it as a "Grey Market Vehicle" - which I assume means the figures are more reasonable.

They do a simple 2-stage idle (~2500RPM hold, followed by normal idle)

My car has a Nismo exhaust (NOT quite sure whether or not it has its "cat" still - there is a cat COVER) and an HKS exhaust, and it passed with no problems at all.

Also, with "Grey Market" cars... the Ministry does NOT require a visual inspection. Normally, if they look under your car and notice that you dont have a catalytic converter... it's an automatic fail. But we are special.

Just curious who else has passed/failed ( and if you know the reason you failed).

To be honest, I don't even know what other provinces have a drive-clean program... so for all I know this could only apply to Ontario owners. (Pardon my ignorance)

The sheet is locked in my car, I'll get it tomorrow and post the actual figures you need to be under. By the way, my car wasn't even tested for NO (Nitrogen Monoxide -> Nitric Oxide).

I edited my last post. It's Nitric Oxide. I don't know EXACTLY what it is because I'm not familiar with the by-products of an internal combustion engine. ops:

    in BC, we have AirCare.
all i know is we don't have to go for emmissions testing until 1 year after it's been registered, so you could blow all the smoke out of your exhaust (within reason) and still get insurance for it

Dammit, here in Ontario, we can't even get plates for the car without an emissions test. We have to drive with temporary permits (10-days) until we get one done.

Plus they recently changed things so you are no longer allowed an unlimited number of temps. Now you are limitd to 4 per year, per VIN.

Oh and this doesn't include the one pre-reistration temp. you are granted.

Essentially its just a product of internal combustion that is commonly known as smog. It ends up out in the air (bad) and can be explained by the equation "energy + N 2 + O 2 → 2NO"

    I like Chemistry.

Depends where you live. One of the benefits of living in NWOntario, no Clean Air testing required. Of course, last week we went from a foot of snow one day with 0 Celcius, to -30, then -40, then -30, then -20, then another half foot of snow, now -20, so there is a trade off.
