    '91 GT-R #14,416

I've recently purchased a GT-R through J-Spec. The car hasn't landed yet, but I thought I'd give a give a bit of insight to others about what it stands like so far. It's fairly stock and in a very clean condition.

My goals for this car is to build a reliable street car that is track worthy. I don't intend on making enormous horsepower numbers with this car, as my power limit will be as high as the stock 440cc injectors will take it. However, I do plan on making this car handle very well, so I will be focusing mainly on its suspension, wheels, arms, chassis, etc.

Any criticism, comments, and suggestions are welcome.

So far I know that the rotors are glazed, and there is minor rust with some bondo repair in the trunk (picture up soon).

I suspect the intake manifold and timing belt cover have been resprayed flat black. However, a friend of mine suggests it may be oxidization. In any case, chipping paint from the intake manifold and timing belt cover are expected from a car this old with this many kilometers.

Nice car! I love the stock look. Especially when it handles better than anything else on the road!

Ensuring reliable oil supply is your main concern.
1 - Find out if the oil pump drive design error was fixed for this car. If not, read the RB26 oil drive issue that's stickied on this board somewhere.
2 - RB26s have been known to suck air into their oil pump intake, particularly under high load, high lateral g conditions. This is the quickest way to a rebuild. Fixes range from installing a swinging oil pickup, to installing a sump baffle, to installing an oversized sump, to overfilling the sump. Be careful with this last one as you don't want your crank splashing in the sump. (I don't know what the safe overfill limit is...)

If you run power to the OEM injector limits you'll also be approaching the clutch limits. Avoid generating any heat with it and it'll have a better chance of hanging in there than if you do even a moderate launch.

Many with RB26 experience will suggest you should budget for a rebuild with 115k+ on the clock. I've heard from Skylines Australia guys that RB26 reliability beyond 120k depends very strongly on maintenance from day 1.

Stay off the rev limiter, don't get too greedy with the boost (both magnitude and duration - 15 seconds on boost is a limit one SAU guy who had 210k+ on his RB26 recommended), and focus on efficiency mods rather than just turning up the boost.

    Enjoy the car!

Well, after 5 months of waiting, I finally got my Skyline GT-R. I'm not bitter that I had to wait this long, nor am I mad at anyone. I'm just disappointed that I had to wait while my friend got his car imported within 3 weeks through the same port.

When I came by to pick up my GTR from the warehouse, it was as weak as a baby Godzilla; this thing was covered in dirt, rotors had a thick layer of surface rust, the battery was completely dead and expired, and it had no fuel. This didn't surprise me at all.

After being closely followed by my friends and 10 seconds of driving in 2 lanes at once, I got the hang of RHD. It's a totally new feeling that needs a bit of getting used to.

Ironically, I was surprised that there were no surprises in my car. No JDM condoms under the passenger seat, no JDM newspapers in the trunk. I only found a JDM coin and some lock nuts in my centre console compartment. I also found out that my 6-CD changer in my glove compartment has had its internals stolen.

This car is incredible, I think all you other GTRCanada users that tune for more power are mentally insane! How much power do you need... you guys will all suffer from some serious whiplash due to power tuning. Stock horsepower is definately all I'll need, especially with todays gas prices.

My current plans for this car are:
-Find a battery with JDM sized terminals
-Secure the vehicle (lock nuts, pager alarm, etc)
    -Modify vehicle to compliance
-Transplant a 1992 240sx FM radio receiver into my car

Hey Dan, thanks for all those tips! I'll be keeping all those in mind, and although I don't want to think about it, I'll be wary of budgeting for a rebuild soon. So far the GT-R seems to be in good shape, and my consult datalogger says the same as well. Do you have any suggestions for determining the engines health? I know a compression test is a must, but how do I tell if the engine is knocking? My datalogger doesn't tell me whether the knock sensor is picking up anything.
I was also wondering if there was a way to adjust the drivers seat so its more upright?

I have another problem I wanted to get off my mind. I keep thinking about the car, and I feel very content and happy driving it. But when I'm not driving it, I feel uneasy. Is it normal to have extra strong feelings for cars? I mean, its only the 3rd day too!

The car looks good! I'm jealous of your intake manifold
It is very common for the paint to flake off of those, my looks awful right now.

One other thing to keep in mind are the drilled rotors, I have VSpec drilled rotors on my car when I bought it, and there were cracks between the holes. Just check them and make sure there is no cracking, because it's quite dangerous if pieces of your brakes start falling off
I wonder how my car even passed shakken with cracked rotors, confirms my beliefs that shakken is just a cash gouge by the dealers/government.

As for the power comment...give it some time and you'll start dreaming of more power
