    Ryan's Rebuild

Well, after getting taken for a ride by a shop and having my old motor blow up after 600 KM's I've taken it upon myself along with a few forum members to get my car back into tip top shape.

The first night getting it home was a bit ridiculous. Chain was barely long enough on the hoist, I was scared of my awesome power fist engine stand folding like a paper bag, and I just about broke my Dad's hand getting it out of the truck.

And then I started finding all of the **** work done on the engine.

Hard to see in that pic, but one of the 4 bolts holding the passenger side motor mount arm onto the block just wasn't installed.

My AAC valve hose was lost and they made another one out of some random other hose laying around. Cut it with a safety knife, and didn't even clamp it properly. A bunch of other hoses were not clamped properly or cut to the wrong length, some bolts and brackets were missing as well. Lots of **** done wrong.

Here's one of my favorites, a bolt not installed in the water pump because the hole was partially covered with RTV. Also, the timing belt had zero tension on it, and a bolt was missing from the timing belt cover.

Another favorite, no lube or loctite on the crank bolt and it wasn't torqued to spec.

Get the head off and there's a lot of carbon on the pistons and some scratching on the cylinder walls, I was a bit scared about getting the pistons out. Don't worry about how they're not in proper allignment, I had the crank out.

There is some scuffing on the skirt, don't know if they're toast or not. Gotta see what the machine shop says. Either way, too much wear for 625 KM's.

You can see the markings along the cylinder walls from where the skirts were contacting.

Bearings looked okay though, and I plastigauged them and they were in spec.

The big mess I have in the garage

And my lonely, naked 4x4 sitting on the driveway.

Should have some more updates soon. Redoing some wiring in the bay, cleaning up some rust that formed from battery acid and brake fluid leaking, perhaps a new transmission, and a few other goodies.

Bummer. Did they use a torque plate when machining the bores?

How about an intercooler? Mine is pretty banged up, looking to replace it if I can.

No, the first machine shop used didn't have a torque plate. It was actually the same place that did the machining on Wingnut's motor. The place I'm going to now (BEL Engines) has a torque plate because another member from here (333) gave them an old head to cut into a torque plate. They also machined and assembled jdmtypes' motor, they seem reputable.

All I can say is WTF!!!

I think you should post up where you got that build done at, so thats one less shady shop in the Edmonton area owners on here will have to worry about taking their cars to.

That would help me out too. I'm about to start getting pricing from shops to build my engine and I can't the same issue happen to me. Either PM me the name so I can stay clear (and not tell others) or post it...

As per my machine shop, some bearing material got onto the cylinder walls which is what caused the damage to the pistons. They might be useable, they might not be. We'll see in a few days when they measure them.

My oil pump seems buggered, there are tool marks all over the front face of the bearing and it looks like I'm going to need a new one. Hopefully I can come up with the cash for a jun/tomei/nismo one, but maybe not.

As far as parts go, I ordered the following:
    -750cc Siemens injectors
    -Nistune board
-Walbro 255 LPH HP fuel pump

Should be ordering new brake rotors from Z-tune today or tomorrow, and am debating between an AEM UEGO or a JAW wideband/display to assist with the tuning.

Wow, crappy stuff. From all the stuff I've seen and heard, there are NO reputable tuners in Edmonton (i'm heading to Lightspeed in Red Deer soon myself), but I haven't looked into engine builders much. Let us know how it goes.
