    It Begins....and continues.....and stops

Well, the winter rebuild is under way. It's a little early as there are a few weeks of dry pavement left. The early start was brought on thanks to copious amounts of burnt oil billowing out the tailpipe after a short jaunt to the local Boston Pizza.

    Before teardown:

Anyhow, the teardown is in the works, and so far we've found a large amount of play in both turbo's and a pile of oil in both compressors. The front turbo being the worst case.

    Teardown begins:

Further investigation shows the engine is in not in too bad of shape. Compression tests show 0-150-160-160-160-60 (cylinders 1 thru 6).

SO. Turbo's. I'm thinking HKS GT-RS', or rebuld the stockers(well, mine aren't original to the car any how) with ball bearing center sections and steel wheels. I'm leaning towards the HKS', though I would like to know if they are a direct bolt on or would the oil and coolant lines require rebuilding?

I won't be sure of the cause of compression losses untill the head comes off sometime within the next month. I'll more than likely do a complete rebuild, including addressing the oil pump drive issues, timing belt issues and the rest of the common stuff we all know about. I plan on doing photo archive and adding it to my cardomain page, as well as post updates and questions I need answered here.

I'm off to tear out the turbos now and do some more cleaning of the engine bay, parts, and snap a few more pic. By the way, I'm doing all the work in my spare time, and in my tiny garage at home!!

Got the first turbo removed last night. Took about 2 hours, as I don't realy have a full compliment of tools at home.

    Turbo Removed:

Here you can see that #1 Cylinder is a little oily. Signs of more work ahead.

    Head shot:

The turbo itself looks good, but the shaft play is quite noticable. You can notice the oil in the inlet as well.

    Turbo inlet:

The turbine impeller looks good though!

    Turbo outlet:

The rear turbo comes out tonight!

    Damn man.

It would have been easier to pull the engine then take the turbo's off since you need to pull the engine out anyways

I wouldn't suggest HKS GT-RS on a stock displacement engine and, to be honest, without having forged internals. The 2 main reasons most people haven't migrated over to the RS's for stock displacement engines is first the issue of lag (there are some nice dynos on SAU/GTR.CO.UK which show how late they come on) and second the issue of it being more turbo than the stock engine can handle. HKS 2530's (which they have begun to produce again) would be more than enough for a nice, fresh stock engine, with much better response, or you could go even smaller with GT-SS's if you're thinking mostly track. A couple of friends over in Japan absolutely swear by them, but their cars do get a lot of use on tracks where response is key. I guess the big question is, what's going in to replace the broken engine, and what's the car going to be used for? If you're stepping up to ~2.8L and a higher rev limit, then the GT-RS's could be worthwhile if you're determined to have low-mounts. Cheers~

Thanks for the info Dr.GTR. I've determined that the turbo's most likely are fine. Cylinder #1 is full of oil, and with 0 compression, I think that problem should be solved first for sure, as it was going to be.

I got a little ugrade happy when I thought it was a turbo problem. If I do choose to upgrade, it will probably be "Disco Potatoes" going in as I do intend to stay low mount.

I'm going to pull the engine this weekend, start to tear it down to properly diagnose the problems and begin the build from there. I just spent some time diconnectiing things and getting ready.

Sounds like a good plan, keep us posted. Have you come across Qualthar's car (the white GT-R) up there in the Mac?

Haven't seen it, if he's still here, he should drop me a line. Though there was/is a silver GTR with B.C. plates around lately..
