R34 Motor and 6 speed trans in R32 GTR.

Ok, So I took the car on my vacation, Lost the rad at the mid point, Ordered a new Aluminum Rad, Shroud, and fans. I then Welded up a substitute out of a Aluminum Dual core rad I had in the parts bin. It was working good, kind of suspected the head gasket as it seemed to be boiling the bottle abit. So I have been looking at various Head gaskets and kits.

But yesterday it all came apart. Well the head gasket went in that big glorious white cloud of smoke.... So Then I realized maybe my temp sensor was bad as everything was fine at the time of catastrophic failure. So now on to my question, What is required to make this work?

This is what I have come up with so far, R23 Base pan and final drive, all R32 engine sensors. Engine mount bases on the motor(use R32) Thats All I can really think of on the motor. Trans requires a different cross member, but I'm not sure which one. Not sure about any of the tranny sensors either. I'm also guessing I'll have to change the transmission rear output tail shaft to, but this is a guess. If anyone can point me in the direction of a build thread or any relevant info it would be great. I have been searching for abit now and haven't really come up with the "do this, do this, and your there type answers.

The cheapest I can find the motor and trans(2000 gtr) is 7500, if some nows for one cheaper let me know.

    Thanks, Ken

Just found this on Skyline Au

    You will need:

New clutch- and or push pull converter. 33 and 34 GTR clutches are pull, 32 is push.

Box- expensive for it's strenght. A 34 6 speed is debatable after 550 odd hp for racing.

    Modified drive shaft/s

    Modified g-box mounts

    34 diffs or similar ratios

Adapt the 32 ATESSA actuator, to the 34 transfer case.

    Adapt the speedo drive

I also have been looking at the Nismo Conversion kit. The kit includes a rear drive shaft, does anyone know if it is 20mm shorter then the R23, If so is it just a R34 Rear Driveshaft. The front driveshaft will come with my motor and trans. The kit also includes a R34 Cross member and mount.

Here is the cheapest I found.

    http://www.japandomesticmotor.com/en...hp?EngineID=96

Don't know condition and haven't check any feedback on the seller. Since I'm now pretty much set on
OS Gikken gear and RB30, if I can ever sell that crank.

Diff. gear is different 3.54 for the R34 and 4.11 in our R32. You can get the whole rear sub frame for about 500$.
And you can always get an aftermarket rear drive shaft, or get one custom made.

Little hint most of the swap I have seen had a butchered shifter, might had the price of a new one or aftermarket
one in the list of parts too.

    Good luck

Great find on the motor and trans, I spent most of the day yesterday investigating the failure, it is most likely a headgasket failure, white oily gel like substance in the upper rad hose, plugs 1 & 2 nice and clean, 3-6 were normal if not abit rich.

I have been quoted on the parts I think I will need to rebuild the motor
Cometic Street Pro Gasket kit - 250
    Cometic Phusion Headgasket - 336
    ARP Heads Studs - 275

Also, How likely is it that the head would crack or warp...... The bottom end and old oil had no coolant in it what so ever. I haven't done a compression check, No gauge yesterday, but in the end all the tell tale signs of HG Failure.

I'm extremely torn on what to do, I realize that for the extra money of the R34 swap I can build a motor, and get a tranny for 3-500 bucks. My tranny will shift fine until warm, then it bites fourth, after a while it'll start with third, by this time fourth is grinding all the time, tried new fluid, no change. Some people are telling me this is normal, but having a tranny that grinds has always bothered me. and the price of OS Gears I can buy my R34 swap. Really a hard choice...

As a after thought, the shifter must also be placed 20mm rearward....... I guess this leads to the butchered shifter.... I'd like to know for sure, looking at budgetting in a ikeya formula sequential shifter....

But thanks again for the info

    Big plans... I like it!

    r34 6spd & 4.1 FD: is a good match for low torque or high rpm engines (<450hp & <8000rpm or >600hp & >9000rpm redline)
    r34 6spd & 3.9 FD: for high torque engine (450-600hp & 8000-9000rpm redline)
r34 6spd & 3.5 FD: only good for high speed runs.

    5spd w/ gear set:
use a gear set with 0.7 5th gear ratio. not the 0.8 close ratio 5th option. 0.8 5th will lose too much topend speed; used for racing on short circuits.

5spd w/ gear set & 4.1 FD: good match for top end speed and any engine with power to top out 5th gear. But, gear sets with 2.6:1 first gear are not a good match for street. 2.6 first gear is too tall. find a gear set with = or > 2.8:1 if you want to keep 4.1 FD streetable.
    5spd w/ gear set & 4.3 FD: for high torque engine (450-600hp & 8000-9000rpm redline) suggest 2.8 first gear.
    5spd w/ gear set & 4.6 FD: high rpm engine >9000rpm redline. 2.6 or 2.8 first gear.
5spd w/ gear set & 5.1 FD: not a good match for street.

    stock 5spd & 4.1 or 4.3 good match
stock 5spd & 4.6 or 5.1 first gear will be too short

Good info guy's, from what I have read the Mine's R34 used R32 Final Drive Gear(4.11) From the research this aparatently the best setup, first may be a touch short. The thing it the OS Gears is it is not just the gears, you need to buy all the R33 Syncro's, and what ever else goes in there, i have been told closer to 8g for the OS Gears when it is all said and done. Now I could be wrong and this is all second hand info.

Last night we hauled the car out of the trailer and yanked the motor out of it. Started at 4:30, out on the floor by 8ish. Getting easier now. I don't know If it is a good thing or not.

    The Investigation

The Engine out on the trolly.

I'm going down now to pull the motor apart and really survey the damage.....

But I'm going to compile a list on everything I think will be need for the swap, going to drop by the bank and see about extra funding for this little project... LOL
