    Removing a windshield

    Hey guys, so I searched the forum to see what I could find on this topic, and found nothing.. searched google, nothing.. so I'm wondering if anyone on here has done it, has any tips so it doesn't break or crack, any special tools they used to help, etc.

    At the moment, just going off the service manual and I'm about to go try to remove the molding. Any feedback would be appreciated!! Hopefully I can get it to Bades in one piece!

    Unless you're super confident and sure about doing this, I highly suggest you find a windshield specialist for this job. Even veteran mechanics like to use the help of a windshield specialist. There is always the risk of cracking a windshield when taking it out.

    Some of the tools used include suction cups to lift the windshield, scrapers to scrape off old sealant, sealant (which is applied to form a spike when looking from the side, this ensures a perfect seal)... ask a specialist for the full list of tools!

    Do you have a new set of molding? They don't come cheap, don't reuse the old one. Last, this is obviously not a one man job.

    I'm just removing the windshield to sell it to another gtrcer, Bades. I don't have new sealant/molding, or suction cups, and I was kinda planning on doing all the prep work myself and getting a friend to come help me lift it out afterwards. So far, I've removed the side molding and working on the upper molding, and it's kicking my ass. I'm afraid of breaking it, so I'm thinking of calling in reinforcements soon. I removed the wiper arms and lower molding, from what I can tell I just need to get rid of the top, then cut the sealant along the glass?

    Oh, and I've managed to break every piece of molding I've removed so far, the clips broke lol... the upper molding is coming off in little pieces so far, I can't see how those clips work

    use fine piano wire or guitar string and slowly "saw" your way around the window frame. thread it through the sealant and then clamp vice grips to each side. have a buddy on the inside of the car and slowly saw your way around the frame. it takes a while but it can be done.

    I saw the guys do mine when i had to get my new one, mine was cracked but when they did it. they removed moulding kit first, then scrapped the sealent, and on inside had to remove the piller trim. and then at the bottem passenger side (facing the front the right side) unplug/cut intenna wire. They cracked my windsheild even more when removing but from that i think they went from inside and pushed it out.... id maybe heat the seams..

    or take it somewhere..so if they break it there at fault lol

    Hahaha that's basically what the buyer recommended this time is he would pay for removal and i'm going to look into glass shipping and insurance as well :P thx for all the feedback

    Remove the windshield wipers by taking off the nuts that hold the assembly down.

    Use a pry tool to remove the rubber fitting around the windshield. Once pried loose the fitting can be pulled easily away from the windshield.


    Run a cold knife or a windshield wire (piano string- as guitar strings are usually to brittle ) underneath the entire perimeter of the windshield to break the urethane seal of the windshield.


    Push the windshield out of its place from inside the vehicle.


    Lift the windshield off the car


    Remove the old urethane bead from the windshield opening using a utility knife

    I've since spoke with several glass people in town, they all say they cannot guarantee the glass will not break, and more often than not, they break coming out. Not entirely sure I'd like to tackle it, sounds like BS!!! lol

    We took the windshields out of the Gold in the Net toyota drift cars using this method
