    Need an opinion on turbo

    Hey guys,

So here is the situation. Bought a used rb25 turbo from a friend for cheap (he is doing a big a/m turbo) and was planning on putting on my RB20 for a cheap upgrade. Unfortunately my friend had already turned the turbo because he did an top mount exhaust manifold last year. So I needed to turn the compressor and exhaust housings back to stock location.

This is where things went south... The exhaust housing was seized tight and in the process of removing the housing altogether two of the blades on the ceramic wheel cracked half way off... Needless to say it was my own fault but none the less very frustrating. Im not sure what to do next. I now have my stock turbo off and a broken 25 turbo.

Im not sure if I should should just bite the bullet and put the stocker back in? Attempt to rebuild the 25 turbo with a steel kit. Or just buy a new one altogether. The last one is ideal but as a student its hard to justify spending 2+grand on an HKS...

    Thanks for the thoughts

Hiflow turbo has ported + polished compressor, exhaust housing, back cut on wheels. Basically anything to increase flow.

Hybrid RB20, RB25 turbo (what your talking about) has Garrett CHRA, Garrett compressor, Garrett exhaust wheels, machined stock turbo compressor, exhaust housings.

If stuck, can use a Mitsubishi EVO TD05 turbo with an adaptor plate on stock exhaust manifold (need to make custom dumppipe). Or a 80's VG30DET non ballbearing turbo (Nissan Leopard, from F31 onwards) that bolts on. In USA the F31 with VG30DET is known as the Infiniti M30 (closer to Canada than Japan or Australia).

    Nissan Leopard -

I think late 90's model Y33 Nissan Leopard had ballbearing turbo.

VG30DET turbo, CHRA is what's used on a Hybrid RB20 turbo. Hybrid RB25 turbo has the T4E compressor wheel but same CHRA, exhaust wheel as VG30DET turbo.

    Hey guys,
Thanks very much for the info. Ive done some more research and am leaning towards a Neo rb25 turbo. Here is a link to one I found on ebay. They claim to be selling them brand new. For the price I would be really interested. I really dont want to buy a new exhaust manifold this year and to be honest I am only looking to do a modest build on my car. Im not looking to build a dyno queen if you know what I mean. Ive also found a few used neo turbos for about half the price...

Doesn't look factory, as no Nissan on compressor housing. Seems to be a Garrett clone of the original turbo that was made by Garrett Japan.

VG30DET turbo bolts on (uses stock intake piping, dumppipe, etc) and flows more than RB25 turbo and can produce consistant 330hp at 1bar with supporting mods. Only downside is it reaches full boost slightly later in rpm than RB25 turbo. Full boost (1bar) at around 4000rpm. Similar to HKS 25/30 turbo.

Any suggestions as to where I could locate one? Most search results for a VG30 Turbo come up as twin tubo set-ups?

There is a VG30DET and a VG30DETT. Make sure Turbine Housing says OP6

I owe you one Skym. Thanks. Ill send some messages and see what comes up...

And thanks 91'. I am aware that the VG30DETT is twin and running a single from that would be
    a) a down grade
    b) not work with rb20 stock manifold
