Can I turn my key on with no engine in the car and the battery hooked up?

Hey guys, my car's engine is still out and the battery is out too. Can I hook up the battery and turn the key to run to do some electrical work (gauges). I obviously wouldn't be cranking it, but it would be set to on.

The battery would be disconnected afterwards until the engine is back in.
So is this safe to do or am I going to make a huge mess? Do I need to pull the fuel pump fuse if I'm not gonna crank it?
I've been brushing my teeth with jack but it's resulted in terrible amounts of tooth decay.

pull the fuel pump fuse, turn the key at "on" and you should have no problem
