    '89 GTS - RB20 to RB25DE with TURBO

    Hello everyone.

Thought I would share some thoughts on my latest ONGOING project.

I have a 1989 GTS with stock RB20 DET, and an upgraded R33 turbo and free flow catback exhaust system. The car had been stripped off excess weight and some mods were done to it over the last few months. However, before the onset of winter, I found that the car was badly overheating. Upon inspection, we found that the water pump AND the thermostat needed replacement, which was done. But then another problem arose - the frost plugs started popping, which meant that the coolant circuitry was constantly getting air pockets. The frost plugs were replaced, but the overheating problem didnt go away. I have now decided to change the motor altogether.

Due to the fact that I am not the son of Donald Trump, I could not afford an RB26DETT, and a decent RB25DET was not available for the price I was willing to pay AFTER selling my bed, my blender, and the dirty rug I had.

Someone had once told me that the RB25 DE (N/A version) as a stand-alone motor produces more power than an RB25DET (without the turbo). I asked around, begged for info, bribed some people, and go the info confirmed thru RELIABLE sources (you know who you are, oh wonderful SAMARITANS!!). The motor is now in my hands, and is sitting quietly in a corner on a stand, waiting to be worked on. For now, I have stripped off the harness an the ECU and the front timing belt cover. Its a pretty clean motor.

Contrary to what everyone says, an N/A RB25 DE motor is a very solid and strong base to start off the modification and upgrade. The only difference that MAY exist is the compression ratio (which is 10:1 in this motor compared to 9:1 in an RB25DET), AND that the pistons may not have oil squirters at their base (for cooling). These two factors COULD mean that my options to run a high boost may be very limited. But I say, "MEH!!". The torquey motor is going to give me a super bottom end and I think I can safely run 1.1-1.3 bar on it to get the top end going. And by the way, when do we Torontonians EVER get a chance to drive our cars fast enough for extended periods of time on the roads WITHOUT getting pulled over by a HOT cop? A trip to Shannonville or Kayuga or MOSport cannot be made every day. And I wanted a daily driver Skyline with enough speed to smoke a VETTE. I think I will have that.

My only fear is that when I open the motor up to see how the internals are, I might find a cracked cam or broken con-rods or inconsistent compression (variance from cylineder to cylinder), in which case a rebuild will be in order.

I will keep adding stuff here as and when it happens.

If any of you guys have any inputs or suggestions for me as to how to increase more power, please feel free to write back. I am also going for 370 or 444 cc inhectors, along with sn SAFC-1. Someone asked me to get a stand-alone ECU, which I cannot find for a few hundred bucks. Anyone got one kicking around? I am all for it.

    Take care, and METAL FOREVER!!
