    RB25 Top Mount Liquid

    Hey all, thought I should post up some of the progress on a build we're doing. We looked at the few good manifolds available, but ultimately decided building one would be easier in the long run. Not sure on how this setup will perform just yet, more experimental than anything, but it sure makes for some fun fab work....

    Getting started on the collector...first we ended up building a jig to make this easier.















    Relocating the power steering reservoir...3/8 and 3/4 hydraulic line, some clamps, a quick trim and it mounts behind the passenger shock tower on an existing bolt. Ill post more pictures later of it all assembled.





    Header mocked up minus the waste gate...













    Pulled it back off to make the waste gate and downpipe...





    Getting started on the downpipe. (I'd like to thank Manny for the 4 inch 304 bends just in time for the weekend)...

    Welded the snout on the end...

    Ready to go back in and mock up the IC pipe and blow thru cobra maf... I'll post more pics soon.

    Thanks for the comments folks, we shaved the valve covers and mocked up the catchcan...I'll post more pics after work tomorrow.

    I need to go change my pants now, that should come with an adult-only label. Where'd you learn to fabricate like that? This makes me think I want to do a few months at a machine shop to learn these things.

    I'm not a pro but .. always heard that wastegate should be plumbed back in the downpipe far enough so it don't f*ck the "flow" ?
    Anyway, how much does a manifold like that cost ? Such a sexy piece !! wish I could weld like that

    looks good so far. that is a very unusual jig for sure. when we spoke on the phone, though i mentioned my saw is vertical, not horizontal like yours. that is probably going to make things a bit different for cutting collectors.

    my only concern with the design of the manifold is the wastegate. having a long elbow like that is going to leave it prone to cracking at the collector. atleast, that is my experience. i always try to keep them as short as possible, but if they have to be long, then i add some form of support. you can use some 5/16" stainless rod like this:



    just keep in mind you don't want to weld the full length of the rod to allow for some thermal expansion and contraction.

    my other concern is the merge for the wastegate back into the downpipe. it may not effect this particular setup, but if you are looking to make a lot of power, it is more ideal to keep the merge more gradual and further downstream from the turbine wheel. here is an example for another application for which i only did the downpipe and recirc dump:

    Update

    Wow Aaron, that is some sick work there bud

    I like how you supported the waste gate with the 5/16 rod, we'll definitely use this tip on an atmospheric dump.

    We certainly squeezed by with the recirculation being just under 8 inches from the outlet of the turbo, from what i understand 6 inches is a minimal, but I could be mistaken. Either way, I'm not worried interfering with flow in the 4 inch pipe, i think for the next one were going to try a nice curve there and maybe bring it further depending on the setup, and see what happens. A lot of it depended on the 4 inch downpipe, wanting to have easy access to the waste gate, and that this car still having AC. Thanks again for the tips, keep' em coming.

    At this point it running, idling, on the cobra MAF, but that's as far as we got. There is a very noticeable difference in the time it takes to rev up compared to the 300zx draw through setup it had on it before, not quite as good as a MAP setup i suppose, but a noticeable difference for sure...regardless we haven't road tested it at all yet, and we haven't been able to find anyone using this newer card style MAF so on our cars, far so good, but we'll see how it works out.

    Next up is welding the catchcan, building the rest of the exhaust.
