Installing Clutch, all advice welcome!

Hello everyone,

Last week my clutch decided to **** the bed, so i went on a search to find something that would be good for what I like to do with my car, both daily and at the track.

My final decision was the ACT heavy duty Unsprung 6 puck.

I will be re surfacing my flywheel, i've made the decision on that already.

But what I would like is advice, experience of other members, or tips/ steps on changing the clutch.

Vehicle is a 92 gts-t

I found the easiest way to get the top tranny bolts out was to remove the tranny crossmember. Once that and the driveshaft are out of the way, you can "tilt" the motor and trans backwards towards the firewall and then easily get your hands up there to remove the bolts. That is also where the breather tube for the tranny is as well, I think one of the tranny bolts holds it in place. It also helps to get the car as high up on stands as you can get it, if you don't have a hoist. This makes sliding the tranny out from under the car much easier. I also didn't remove the slave cyl. line, I just unbolted it from the trans. Have a good floor/trolley jack ready to lower and raise the tranny, it's heavy, lol. Also be careful when you tilt the tranny back, you might loose some gear oil out the rear output shaft opening.

thanks, you sound like you've done it before, do you think you could list the basic steps? like what neeeds to be removed etc.

Done it a few times now, lol.
Basically get the car on stands, remove the drive shaft and slave Cyl. You will also at this point need to remove the shifter from the top of the tranny. You will also need to unhook the speedo cable as well as any other wires. Remove the tranny cross member, and support the trans with a trolley jack. Carefully tilt everything back (lower the trans). Remove the starter, and then go to town on the mounting bolts. Once all the bolts are out, you should be able to start separating the trans from the engine. You might need a prybar of sorts to help it split.
In a nutshell that's basically it, once you have the tranny out you will need to swap out the release bearing and the pilot bushing. I usually use a slidehammer and hook to pull the pilot as they usually stick.
When you go to put it back together, use a VERY small amount of lube on the input shaft, too much and you will be doin this all over again in about a month or two (contaminates clutch disc). Hope this helps, it's a pretty straight forward job. Skylines are one of the easier clutches to replace from my past experiences.

Thats all helpful info. Ive done this a few times myself. You will have a hard time with the tranny bolt that holds the breather tube, i found was easiest to remove the starter first then get it from the engine bay with a gear wrench. I found jacking up the front of the engine to point the rear down saves a lot of profanity lol. When removing the tranny you need to turn it as you pull it out to fit the bellhousing out. Remember what angle you turned it to because you have to turn it again when putting it back in. Get an impact gun on hand to get the flywheel bolts off, but other than that its pretty straight forward.

thanks for the advice guys. we tried getting her off tonight but had some trouble with a couple of the bellhousing bolts. only the front isn jacked up on stands

wish i would have seen this before we started!

Yeah your definatly gonna want the rear jacked up also. Theres just not enough room to get it out otherwise. Good luck and be safe under there. Make sure your jacks are good quality and the car is supported evenly.

While the tranny is off, would it be wise to replace whatever u can in there?
Such as tranny imput and output shaft seals, crank shaft seal(if possible), clutch pivot ball and new flywheel bolts.
Anything else anyone can think of?
