Wanting to do Holset HX40 turbo on my R33 - need to know what it invovles

Hey guys, I'm currently sitting without a license without **** all to do, so I'm going to start building MR R33

I want to do a turbo upgrade, and I was checking out a few videos on youtube and one guy has an HX40 setup on his and it looks pretty nice, he's saying around 500-600 bhp and on a stock block no internals done which is kinda what i want, don't want to have to take it out and apart if i don't have to you know what i mean

now i see these turbos for decently cheap around "thebay" but i am not sure if they are genuine holsets or knock offs

I'm reading into it a little bit and I know iLl need to get a top mount manifold, anyone have any idea where to get one? the thing that confuses me is the plenum, do i need to have a front facing plenum too?

this is my current setup its pretty stock so i need to know what i'll need for this project then decide if it's worth it or not for me

    3.5" exhaust
    greddy front mount intercooler
    apexi bov
2.5" piping (mite need to upgrade that)
    hks mushroom intake
    hks evc4 boost controller
3 or 3.5" downpipe (not sure on kind)
    stock ecu

any info would be much appreciated as i'd like to start collecting parts asap

25 bottom end will only take 400whp if you want it to last. There are claims of 500+ on some of the auzie forums but it all comes down to reliability.

I'm currently collecting parts to build my 25. IMO key to reliablity is build the motor to handle 200hp more than your planning to make.

IMO this is your shopping list.
Forged Pisons and rods. I got mine on the ebay combo deal also but watch who you buy from. Make sure its legit.
    Acl Race Bearings
    Balance rotating assembly
Block and Head decked for metal head gasket.
    Heavy duty clutch
    Big intercooler
Might get away with 2.5" intercooler pipe, i went 3"
    44mm+ wastegate
    750+cc Injectors
    Walbro fuel pump
    upgraded coils
    Cams make power easier
    upgrade oil pump
    Tune
If you really want to get intensive with it, port polish head
    valve springs
    clean up valve seats

thanks for the reply dude, but like i said I dont' want to open up the block quite yet, I want to go with this holset setup on stock block and see what it can do, if it blows up then sure i'll build up the block but I don't want to open it all up and pay for internal parts quite yet, do you happen to know what needs just for that holset turbo to go on? I'm assuming i'll need that top mount manifold, some kind of plenum front facing (confused on this) , my intercooler should handle it with no problem but I am not sure its pretty huge front mount, injectors? fuel? ecu/computer/some kind of tuning? clutch?

i had a holset on my car before i went with a good turbo. I had an hx35 it was laggy as hell, hx40 on stock motor would lag so bad would be undriveable IMO. Only way to make a big turbo like that work is madure head work.

But if your ademant about it this is what you need:
Top mount manifold. Ebay one will work, just brace it so it won't crack on you.
    custom downpipe
    custom oil lines
    re rout coolant lines
    44mm+ waste gate
    front facing manifold
    q45 throttle body
    750cc+ injectors
water meth system if your attmepting this on a stock motor
    walbro 250 fuel pump
    good a/m coilpacks
    colder spark plugs
    heavy duty clutch setup
    3" intercooler pipe

Think thats pretty much it to effectivly blow up your motor haha.

that movie proves the lag i'm talking about just full throttle driving, listen closely how long it takes for the wastegate to open between shifts, a good responsive turbo with the same flow as that turbo will spool in less than half the time

Biggest give away is when he's rolling on the gas while your watching the tach and listen for the waste gate, he's not making full boost till almost 6 grand,

hmmm ok, any ideas on a turbo that is not super expensive but an upgrade over my stock one? ideally one that would just bolt right up would be sweet but i'm likely not going to find that haha

and i have a F1 racing stage 3 clutch 6 puck, I put it in the summer time, I don't know if that will hold much but that's what I have.. It was definintely a cheaper one from ebay but it seems good as of right now but with more power not so sure , I'm on a budget tho, I'm not one of these guys that can spend a zillion dollars on top name parts, I wish I could but I'll be going back to school and rent to pay so that's not an option for me right now

    thanks dude

For numbers you want to make, spend money or your wasting your time, So much work in making those numbers you'll be throwing money away doing it twice.

I had that f1 stage 3 on my old motor, after 300whp started slipping. Best bang for buck clutch to hold numbers you want is the ACT XTD series rated to hold 630ft lbs. Run you around 600-700 bucks depending where you buy

I don't necessarily want to make 500+ hp, I was just throwing a number out there I heard that holset can make, I'd be happy with around 350-400 whp , that's still damn quick, I'd be good if I could break into the 12's 1/4 mile, i think 350-400 whp would put me in the 12s eh?
