Buying from Province X? - to Ontario?

    Hey Folks,

Ive been doing quite a bit of reading and have a good feel for the importation, registering and insurance info. Thanks to all those you posted that stuff to make it easier for others.

I do have a question regarding buying a GTS/GTR or any other import for that matter from a seller in another province. I am specifically interested in buying it into Ontario. I understand that the rules may be the same as importation but I wanted to confirm perhaps first hand from someone who has already done this.

In fact if you have done this, I would appreciate your time if I could send you a pm and ask you a few questions or keep it in this thread for future reference.

I appreciate all your help. If all goes well, I have plans to buy a GTR by the end of the year. I am just not rushing into it at the moment and trying to have my research down before making the move.

    Thanks for your help,

    FarShark

Not sure for Ontario but in Alberta, we just have to do a OOP inspection. and they need to know the vin number used in the last province.

Same thing as any other car in Canada as far as I know, the car has already gone through the whole importation process. Just have to pass the inspection.

Yeah, as far as I know it's just the same as buying a car that's already in Ontario. As long as it's in Canada somewhere it's hassle-free.

buying a car from another province is not like buying one from the province you are already in...

if you buy a car, regardless of it being an import, from another province it has to go through the OOP, out of province inspection... even if the car had passed for the previous owner you still need to have the oop done... and it is at this time they will look for all the stuff required to pass... some vehicles in other provinces have not done all the stuff to pass but got away with it... but there is no gauruntee you will have the same luck...

now if you buy from the same province you are in, then you do not need to get the OOP done since the car never left hte province... it is with cars like these you will find less hassle

Its doesnt matter if its an import or not, if you move province, you have to do an OOP. My wife new car had to do OOP going to BC, then again back into Alberta.

We also have the 10 year (or 12?) rule for our insurance companies here so even within province we have to inspect for any car over 10 or 12 years.

I appreciate the replies so far.

Although it confirms my fear that if I do buy a Skyline from another province (Not Ontario) the inspections will look at all the small details that may have been overlooked at the time of importation resulting in a cost that may be greater than the saving of buying it outside the province.

The cars on this side of the country are relatively fewer and hence the prices are significantly higher, in fact I was even browsing through the classified forum and was seeing some on the west coast with decent modifications going for the same price or less than you'd get a stock one here. This may not be true, but its a trend I have noticed.

Generally I see the cars in Ontario a bit more pricier than the ones in other provinces.

but dont forget while you may save 1-2k from buying from BC or ALB, you still have to get the car to Ontario, which will cost 1-2k

which is also why prices in the east are a little higher

From what I understand, the OOP can be a joke depending on where you take it. As in, too easy. The mechanics have different levels of inspections. I havnt done an import inspection but I understand its much more involved then an OOP. Somebody else should confirm.

i've gone through the same thought process as you since i too live in ontario and am looking for a vehicle as well.

i agree, cars are far cheaper out of province.

that said, if you do by in ontario (although very few to choose from), at least you can see the car in person before droppping a ton of money on one - personal preference.

as for buying out of province, i don't see why there would be any issue in registration/safety because the vehicle has already been imported into canada so it should be treated as a regular domsetic vehicle. i would think that it be just be a simple ownership transfer from province X to Ontario provided that you have your typical emissions and ontario safety like you would for any other car.
