    What should we do if pulled over in Quebec?

    So although I'm out of the province at the moment I'll be back soon so I'm concerned about driving my skyline in Quebec. My friends have told me that they've seen alot more RHD vehicles pulled over. So what should we do if pulled over by the cops, especially if the cop orders us to get an inspection? We need to know what our rights are, what the cops can and can't make us do, and how to respond to the cops' issues with us and our cars. Put up any suggestions, especially if you're knowledgeable on the subject of the RHD ban and inspection issues.

    Here are the articles of the Highway Safety regulating when and why a police officer can order an inspection for your vehicule:

    Code de la Sécurité Routière

    521. Les véhicules routiers suivants, sous réserve de l'article 543.2, sont soumis à la vérification mécanique:

    10° les véhicules désignés par un agent de la paix qui a des motifs raisonnables de croire qu'ils ont subi des modifications visées à l'article 214 ou sont dans un état tel qu'ils constituent un danger;

    214. À moins d'une approbation préalable de la Société, il est interdit:

    1° d'apporter à un véhicule routier destiné à circuler sur un chemin public des modifications au châssis, des modifications à la carrosserie ou à un mécanisme si elles sont susceptibles de diminuer la stabilité ou le freinage du véhicule ou toute autre modification pouvant convertir un tel véhicule en un autre type de véhicule;

    2° d'apporter des modifications à un véhicule automobile ou un ensemble de véhicules routiers qui est destiné à circuler sur un chemin public à des fins expérimentales et qui n'est pas conforme aux dispositions de la Loi sur la sécurité automobile (Lois du Canada, 1993, chapitre 16).

    Highway Safety Code

    521. The following road vehicles, subject to section 543.2, must be submitted to mechanical inspection:

    10) vehicles designated by a peace officer having reasonable grounds to believe that modifications described in section 214 have been made to them or that they are in such a condition that they constitute a hazard;

    214. Except with prior approval from the Société, no person may

    1) make, on a road vehicle intended to be operated on a public highway, alterations to the chassis, alterations to the body or to a mechanism if susceptible of reducing the stability or braking capacity of the vehicle or any other alteration that would transform a vehicle into a vehicle of another type;

    2) make alterations on or to a motor vehicle or combination of road vehicles that does not meet the requirements of the Motor Vehicle Safety Act (Statutes of Canada, 1993, chapter 16) and that is intended to be operated on a public highway for testing purposes.
    You can also read this, which are the guidelines given to the officers (it's in french):

    you're safe on out of province plates. quebec cops have no authority to order other provinces' vehicles inspected.

    .
    Yeah ! and when you come to BC the same thing. The cops cannot order a car to have that Province's VI, if it is registered in aother province or country because the vehicle has been deemed to meet the regulations for the region it lives in. Think about it, , , if your car insureance didn't work the same way you wouldn't have insurance the moment you crossed over the Aberta boarder ! Does that happen ?

    I live on the border between Quebec and Ontario, and everytime I insure a new vehicule, they ask me if I drive frequently across the border, i.e. go to work with it since I work in Ottawa.

    I haven't noticed a difference in policy price, but I think if they are not told, and something happens, it could be one of those "you were not supposed to be there so we dont pay" situation.

    Once in a while is probably not a problem, like driving to the U.S. on a trip.

    Maybe I should move to Ottawa, but keep the car plated in Quebec, and get rid of all my problems... lol.

    Auto theft in Quebec is huge and your company is probably asking how often you're there because of that reason. So they can give you a realistic fire/theft premium based on the increased risk of you spending more time in an area of the country with higher auto theft.
    I know of a local RV rental place that wont let you use their insurance if you're driving through Quebec.
