I remember when my parents went to school down in Indiana for a year, they left the Manitoba plates on the car for the duration. I'm not sure what the exact ruling is, but I'm pretty sure it should be okay. You will just have to be prepared to prove every last detail of ownership and registration to the local authorities though. Keep everything regarding that in your car at all times when you are down there.
