Does the car still have AC? My AC pump made a similar noise before it seized.
Turned out to the the alternator lower bolt getting loose and for whatever reason, it lightly knocked against the block every cycle (that's why it sounded like something in the block, so low). Found a nut and locktite'd it back on, hopefully that won't come loose again.
