  • The pain of skylines for young kids.

Well I come to realize today that I am not invincible, I am 17 and I work 7 days a week, and go to school and manage to pass. Right now I'm in co op and am up and about to be at the shop for 7am and I work till 1pm then i get to breathe take a nap then i work at sears from 4-9 every day and on weekends I work 8 hour days Saturday and Sunday. So I can hand over 3,400 to my insurance company so I can drive the car. Plus I cant even afford it without working like mad, For 2-3 months now and I only have half, Gosh darnit these cars are expensive, can someone explain to me why insurance thinks that they can charge people 3,000+ a year come on. Just because SOME kids think through there Di** doesn't mean every kid does, I need a car to get around to my jobs and school. I just want to drive something I like not some 500 dollar American car that isn't even close to safe.

Sorry for the rant. But no one is on msn to talk to and I'm just tired. This thread is probably going to get deleted, and I am just tired, so delete if nessecary. But i think what insurance is doing to skylines is total B.S

Not to be an ass but i think this came up when u originally asked about skylines... i am not saying we told, u so u live u learn thats just the way it is and i am think u have learned alot form this if ur half way there and thats pretty good for 3-4 month, it took me a year with a higher paying job and no school so just think about that, what u are tring to do is pretty exteam. maybe quit one of the jobs yes it will take longer but u really have to work on school grades dont really effect ur life all that much but u DO have to grad. that and u have got to live school life ie girls, partys and all the other dumb **** thats so much fun. Once u get out od school thats when life really starts so live up ur play time now . u'll get ur car just not this year

and there is nothing wrong with not having a car for a while, if u live in a big enuff city public transit is not all that bad

yah, i love living in saskatchewan. For the whole year i pay 190, and i get a 200 deductable, and to plate it for 6 months maybe runs me 700 bucks. So 900 bucks with 200 deductable. And i have negative points lol...(not that im bad at driving but one accident and it sits with u for a bit) but i dont know how some provinces pay $2000 grand plus for insurance. i would hate that. But yah it sucks, im 18 and still young, and you just need to compimise you expenses. If you need to pay a **** load for a car, dont get parts for it right away to make it look good. Take care of it, and get parts when you can afford them, so you dont have to work your ass off.

To be honest, here is why you pay so much:

        1. You are 17
        2. You live in Ontario, in the GTA area.
        3. You drive a high powered, expensive-to-repair car

When I was 17, I couldn't even afford to have a $500 POS. You should consider yourself lucky that you even own a car at your age. I didn't have my own car until I was 21, I drove my mom's 1986 Civic until then.

The only positive thing I can say is that if you keep your record clean your insurance should drop every year.

        Good luck!

well im younger than you but im going to say this... focus on school. You can always buy a skyline later in life. You can also go back to school but do you want a be the 20 year old super super senior? high paying job or a cool car in high school?

The only reason i drive a skyline is because i work 7 days a week over 12 hours a day in the summer. That covers my insurance easy and alot more. I do have a job during school but i work 20-25 hours a week max. That usually covers gas and normal stuff a teenager buys

The skyline has nothing to do with his insurance. A caviler, would be the same price. My Stock 92 eg was 285/month, 240sx at 18 was 350/month. Even my YJ was 200/month at 20 and that's the cheapest insurance vehicle out there in Ontario.

The average Ontarian pays $2500 a year, thats the average between you at 3400 and your parents, or your grandparents or whomever who pay under 1000$ for 2 cars.

It sucks, but keep a clean driving record, get your G and turn 21 and you'll see some improvement. You're a kid, they can take advantage of you.

I got some sleep and just to clerify, I am doing co op, its work placement for school. Im only in grade 11 and in grade 12 its classes. so right now im just a little burnt out but from what ive been told wether I get a car at 17 or at 21 my insurance is going to be the same, and I dont have debt right now, so it makes sense to buy the car and let the insurance go down so that way when school puts me in debt i wont have to sell my car because of insurance. It will work out hopefully, I just want my car, something to work on bring to co op tear apart, and drive around having good times with friends. I know its stupid, but i took co op for a break from school. and right now I work 15-16km away from my house and go to school 5km away , so i need a car to get to school then from school to work, but you take what you get i guess, im almost there and once i get it it will be a life goal complete and this site will be raped with pics, you can delete the thread i was really drained when i wrote that.

Just finish school and move west. Insurance is cheaper, and there are lots of jobs. But to expect to get everything when you are only 17 is tough. Sometimes you have to WANT something for a long time so you appreciate it more when you get it.

As the japanese say "daiji ni shite".

If you keep working at it you can get your car. Also are you looking for a GTR or just any ol skyline? Even myself with $100,000 a year job cant afford a GTR. But I have a wife and 4 kids. But still, your priorities change through life. One thing to do would be perhaps take more baby steps.

For example, if you are NOT driving a car now, and wait till your 21 to get the skyline you wont have an insurance record. (clean or bad) so when you go to insure it (at least here) you will still pay through the nose. Some sometimes its better to just get SOMETHING so you can be insured on it so you cna get a clean record. Tnen when you do get the skyline your insurance will be cheaper.

Its just the way things are. When you are a teen you are expected to do really stupid stuff. I did, stunts that would have gotten me arrested many times but most insurance companies expect that when you are younger.

I know people who are mid 20s driving Talons and 240s that pay $400 too becasue they didn't stop with the antics.

An other person I know had a Viper GTS at 21 and dropped...wait for it $1100/mo...the the really of a young sportscar owner in GTA.

If you want some real advice it sounds like thats too much for you right now, if you invested all that money with a financial adviser or broker you would own an insurnace company by the time you were my age

i agree with that, buying and modifying a car at your age was the worst thing i ever did. I dumped so much money into that thing to keep it running, then it would break down. And i'd put more money into it.

Here i am now, 23, in school, with debt out my ass, even owning a car at this point in my life is silly. listen to Z-tuned, it's the same thing i say to my little brother. There is noo point working your butt off to afford something as trivial as a car.

There is thing young kid with a newer prelude who works across the street from my condo, He thinks he's got the life, nice car, a job that pays his bills, and gives him some money to spend on girls, nights out and his car. He can't afford to live on his own, has no savings and is going no where.

Just be smart, you can't afford to do everything when you're young. Don't miss out on things that come up in the future because you spent money where you didn't have to now.

I did the exact same thing. I dropped over $15,000 into my 94 accord when I was 18 yrs old, she was a show stopper and a bullet full motor swap etc. Managed to sell if for 12 gs bought myself a BMW at 20 and drove that for a while but then sold it for my skyline. I would seriously say wait until you have the money as these cars are not cheap to maintain. I now have to watch my budget as I am now engaged and working on beginning a family, so alot of the time my car is put on the back burner. take your time man don't screw your life up wait till you have money or you can get in big debt.

Yeah this may sounds weird from me, a guy who makes a living in the aftermarket industry. But modifying a car is a dead-end street if you don't have the money to play. I mean you can go with light mods and whatnot and still be distinct.

I would gradute up to a Skyline first, get a 1.8T Golf or a 240 or maybe AE86. Something easy on insurnace, Civic Si, 3-series, whatever is cost effective for insurance and maitenance.

If you can put a few hundred a month towards investments instead of the satanic insurnace companies pocket you will be much further ahead.

Maybe I'm just falling into the hindsight is 20/20 trap?! If didn't go so overboard on cars like dropping $15000 cash on a 325iC when I was 21 costing $300/mo insurnace and thousands to repair... I would probably be very wealthy :-(

lol you think your insurance is alot, try 4600 for a year for a guy who is 19 and owned a 2003 Nissan ser spec v(20,000), with a 11 dollar a hour job. I have a big surcharge for a previous accident and a excessive speed ticket. The rules are pretty tough in B.C and alot of it gets reflected into insurance.

Now I am 21 still have a large surcharge but a clean driving record. I own a 2004 SRT-4(30,000)+ a 1989 GTR(15,000-20,000). I only make 13.50 a hour now, full time. I get by, pay rent at home, go out have some fun but I still manage.
I think you need to find one job, one only, make sure it pays decent because the amount of jobs you have dont sound like they pay alot. Also if you cant afford a skyline while in school and working then dont...the stress will tear you apart and thats not worth it.
