  • Overseas Speeding Ticket

I went to Australia last month and just got a photo radar speeding ticket in the mail from the Victoria police. What are my obligations in terms of paying it? I plan on visiting Australia again, so I don't wnat to mess up any future visits. But at the same time I don't want to pay if I don't have to.

The annoying thing is that the ticket is for 6km over and $134. Only 6 over, bloody hell.

Anyways, anyone had experience with overseas tickets? Or anyone in Australia know how strict they are about paying?

    THanks!

You may want to try one of the aussie skyline forums like http://www.skylinesdownunder.com They've probably had their fair share of tickets if you get one for just 6km over the limit. I hear they have photoradar all over the place there.

      This happened to me!
I was in the UK... came home... few months later... speeding ticket! I wrote them back and said my crooked cousin was the one driving not me! which was true. Never heard from them again.

        Bad luck Daryl,

I'd find out what they expect from you and then pay before you return, but no sooner unless there are big carrying charges. Deferring speeding fines is just as good as deferring taxes!

Usually those things have a way of compounding quickly if you don't pay, and there is the slim chance of being arrested on arrival back there if they're really serious about it The US is serious, you don't mess around with their tickets, or you will end up in jail next time you go.

there should be information of how to pay on the back of the ticket, i would just pay it and be done with it. mail them the check, and make sure it is certified mail so they have to sign for it in order to accept it that way you will have a tracking number and proof they picked it up.

australian's are nazi's for speeding tickets...when i was there i couldn't figure out why nobody was speeding, even a little, then we saw a sign that said if you were caught doing 120 in a 100 zone that you would be fined a massive $565 and half you points on you license would be removed. Its nuts i tell ya.

My suggestion is though to pay it and suck it up if you plan on going back, no point in getting arrested for an unpaid speeding ticket next time you visit OZ.

Got a ticket onc ein new york ( 2 years back ). Never paid it.

FF to past summer, wanted to drive through new york, but I wanted to make sure my liscence was not suspended for not paying.

This is the answer I got :

"Son, if you got a ticket in the state of new york and haven't paid it, better not we catch you. Your driver's liscence is NOT VALID."

This sucks I had to pay it.
Guy : "Dude ! hown much did you pay for your car ?"
Me : "And how much did you pay for your girlfriend ?"

Well, I think I'm going to pay it just to avoid any future troubles. Guess I will keep a better eye on the speedo next time

I noticed that in NZ too, nobody speeds, but then again, every little back road has 100km speed limit and it slows to 70 or 50 in school zones!

I'd first spend the 10bucks it might cost to call them and to simply ask them what happens if you don't pay...

...you never know, maybe it's as simple as "Well you won't be able to register as a citizen if you don't pay"...and I mean...if that's the case...I wouldn't pay.
