  • Misfire troubleshoot!

Just thought id share my experience.

So out of nowhere last night my exhaust began to sound more of a blub-blub-blub than a bllluuuuuubbb liek it normally does. Immediately i assumed coil problems. So after getting everything apart i unplugged each coil one at a time while car was on and found that Number 3 made no change whether plugged in or not. so i changed the coil from my spare engine. Same out come. so then i tried another coil just to be safe, same thing.
then i took out the plug to find i have nice NGK iridium 7. my old motor has NGK iridium wiht a GReddy stamp on the side.
I quickly swapped in another plug and (exmlamation of joy!) my engine was back to sub normal sounding and operaing. It was still off (assuming because of mismatched plug) but it ran 900RPM on idle instead of the usual 7-7500. So i can only assume that i have been running a dying plug for sometime and now it gave out finally.

    SO anyways,

What plugs would you recommend and what gap? i ahve heard about a 1.0 gap is good. I am just gonna get a new set since i am changing one.

I presume this is for RB20DET???

NGK PFR5A is stock for RB20DET and PFR6A is the colder heatrange for say intake, exhaust mods.

0.8mm spark plug gap. 1.1mm is factory spark plug gap.

so the car pulls alot better than it ever has..but i noticed when the turbo is spooling up and at full bost..there is a small whine/whistle. doesnt sound bad, but i have never had this before. Any idea what it coudl be? It just seems to be a whistling that is kind of high pitched.

Whistling can be an airleak after turbo (check intake hose clamps or check for cracks on the rubber intake pipe joiners). Especially check the intake hose clamp that's infront of turbo.

If it still whistles, then it's probably the compressor wheel touching the compressor housing (turbo). You can check this by pulling of the intake pipe that's infront of turbo, wiggle the compressor wheel to see if compressor wheel is hitting compressor housing (too much play).
