Nevermind, my dad just pulled the shaft right out of the housing. Whether or not that is the right way, it doesn't matter I suppose as long as it's put back together right.

The FSM says to remove the front diff. cover then pry the end of the stub axle till it pops out. There is a spring clip that holds it in place. How did he manage to get enough of a grip on the outside of the axle to be able to pull it out?? I have tried this before but the boot just pops off and the joint comes apart leaving the stub axle still in the diff.1991 Case 580K 2WD Extendahoe (aka "Brutus")

Yes, sorry thats what I meant, he pulled the joint right out of the stub. And thankyou for the info on the spring clip, because we are still having problems with it even after taking the transfer casing apart. MMM, factory manuals

The drivers side - sometimes - you can pop it out with a prybar and a hit with a hammer at the right place.
Sometimes, it will just not come off. So you have to pull the front diff cover. Not too big of a deal.
Put Redline Shockproof Heavy back in the front diff - ok... Sucks when you break the spider and spit parts out the front diff case, which means now you have to replace the oil pan.... I have done it....umm more than once.Sean Morris
