  • OIL Additive Talk!!

Alright, I don't wanna talk about engine oil since there is already a big debate going on about it elsewhere in the forum but how do you feel about engine oil additives?

I work in a garage and I've seen many many many different additives which I have used on my beaters but I never dared to put them in any of my rear cars..

Today we had a rep come in from BG products www.bgprod.com and he did a really nice demo on some additive.. It seemed to be much more "slippery" then engine oil. How would you guys feel about adding a can of additive to your skyline? Should I worry about my Turbos? I would like to give this product a try on my next oil change. Incase it makes a difference I use AmsOil 20w50

I believe the product is MOA.. I can also get my hands on RF-7.. what do you guys think http://www.bgprod.com/products/engineoil.html

I'll tell you guys how the tests were conducted and I found it very interesting..

The rep had a machine.. that machine had a little electric motor that made a steel wheel turn pretty rapidly.. now under the wheel there was a little cup where you would put different types of oil and the wheel would partly be in the cup so it would always have some lubrication.. now over the wheel he had a large bar that held a little piece of metal.. now the point of this is to pull on the bar.. the bar will push the piece of metal onto the wheel.. you have to pull as hard as you can on the bar until you creat enough friction to stop the wheel.. on the bar there is a guage that tells your how much pressure you applied. once the wheel is stopted you can release the handle take off the little mettal bead and check out the damages caused by the two pieces seixing together.. now obviously you wanna have the biggest amount of lbs possible with the least wear on the metal piece.

now this is what we got

Castrol 5w30 - took about 15lbs, the metal bit was pretty beat up
Parts Master 5w20 - Took about 18lbs and the metal was sligtly less damaged then 5w30
Castrol 5w50 Syntec - took 13lbs and the wheel was more damaged then 5w30
DTM engine additive - 10lbs and lots of wear... was even worse when mixed with engine oil
bg engine additive - 80lbs!! the thing wouldn't stop it was crazy and the damage was minimal
water - (my idea :P) 20lbs, low damage

BTW, I'm getting a free can, all I'm debating is weather it's a good idea to put it in the skyline or if it can be bad for the engine or turbos.

Unfortunatly I didn't have any of the oil I use in my engines on hand (mobile 1, Amsoil and Redline) to test but would a mixture of Amsoil and DG be any good or useless?

I dont know, I always thought that oils were made with certain properties and that if an additive really helped it would be in there in the first place.

its odd that the castrol synthetic was worse than the normal 5w30?
If you still have complete control of your car you are not going fast enough!

yeah I was shocked as well.. althoug the end result was still pretty similar I thought syntec would of stood up to the test much more then it did! I wonder how a real syntec oil like mobile 1 would stand up... humm..

yeah, the only problem with water is that it doesn't stand heat

I'd love to but the rep left with the machine and my budget isn't big enough to buy 1 quart of each just for a test :P

Next time your rep comes by get him to heat the oil up so it is more similar to the real operating conditions of an engine. Testing cold oil is kinda useless IMO
