  • R33 GTR trans in a R32?

I found a R33 GTR trans locally to me pretty cheap, and my 2nd gear syncro is weak, my question is will it bolt in? Are the 33 and 32's the same. I tried searching but the search function here only looks for word 4 characters long it seems. thanks

you'll have to update your clutch to pull type or switch the bell housing with your old tranny to keep the push type clutch.

you can't just "switch the bellhousing"... pretty sure thats not possible...

bottom line, you need to change the clutch to a pull type/

What's involved in changing to a pull type clutch?

just need to get a pull type clutch kit. the flywheel will be the same though, unless you go with a light weight.

Ask a sponsor for kit to switch push to pull. It's no biggie.
The speedometer pickup is different too. The R33 unit engages the same gear in tranny, but converts it to pulses right at the transmission while the R32 has a speedometer cable.
I'll be doing some homework to figure out best to do this and will post up the answer when I find it.

As far as I heard, the only thing stronger in the r33 tranny is the syncros.
I wonder if it would be possible to rebuild an r32 tranny with r33 syncros, and if anybody has done that...

Getting any new syncros isn't too expensive from the dealership, and you won't have to worry about switching the clutch or the speedo.

your right about the only thing stronger being the synchros.. but add to that the R33 tranny is "newer" by a few years as well... and i seriously doubt you've ever actually either:

                  a) looked inside an RB26 tranny
                  b) looked at the schematic in the owners manual..

well over a few THOUSAND little tiny pieces all needing to be done to spec to rebuild a tranny... and if you don't do it perfectly. its not gonna work "perfectly"...if you doubt the complexity please let me know, ill be glad to post up a few photos.

the bellhousing is attached to many of the parts inside the tranny, very tough to do nate, BUT i reckon some massochists have done it before lol

in regards to switching push to pull.. its basicaly just a new clutch slave cylinder, and clutch kit (ie: pressure plate, friction disc throwout bearing etc)..
lots of people in the UK and AUS put R33 tranny on R32... totally a good idea.

about the speedo cable, not sure what people are doing about that?... are you certain R33 isnt mechanical cable?

Well, thats pretty much what I was asking....is it a completely redesigned tranny or did they just use syncros made of a better metal and will be a direct fit?

there is something else is that is stronger inside. honestly i forget (i think stronger 4th and 5th gear). but i just got my r33 trans... and will prolly be pulling my r32 in a week or so (depending on how busy work is) ... bellhousing swap is possible by the way. and yes the speedo cable is different. yes it is possible to put r33 parts in an r32 .... its about 600+ for parts plus your labour.

I'm in the same situation now. I haven't decided if I'll bother with the push to pull kit or a pull clutch as I have a badass push type clutch. As for the bell housing swap, it sounds like a lot of work... How do you convert the speedo cable?

Things you need to do when swapping to an R33 transmission

First, the clutch slave cylinder. You have two options if you got an aftermarket clutch with it you might as well use it. If not you will need to convert. This is done by drilling and tapping the two mounting holes on the transmission case where the R32 slave should be.

Second, the clutch fork pivot. This is not used in the R33 therefore unbolt the one from the R32 and swap it. You could also buy a conversion kit if you dont want to swap forks.

Third, the Speedometer input. As everyone knows the R33 is electronic and the R32 is mechanical. Just unbolt and swap the R32 one for the R33 one. You can do this because the drive is much bigger on the R32 and Nissan just slipped the electronic drive in the mechanical one. The R32 gear will be offset to one side because it is larger.

Just the be clear, are we talking about completely removing the R32 speedo cable and using an R33 or are we talking about going and changing the adapter on the gearbox? Sorry for questions, me noob at this swap crap.
