    safeties in alberta?

    hey i'm looking to buy a car from alberta and drive it home, the owner is saying its insured and plated but in alberta you don't need a safety. is this true that in alberta you do not need to safety a car when changing owners? i know i will have to get the car certified once i reach ontario but thats not going to be an issue.

    anyway thanks in advance

    i'm asking if there are safeties in alberta and if so how strict are they, i know it wont mean anything in ontario. this information would just give me an idea of the cars condition. if i'm going to be driving all the way out there if i know the car was recently safetied insured and plated it mean the car was at least legal. i'm just un-familiar with alberta conditions on certification safety e-test ect.

    just cause it's plated doesn't mean anything. if it helps you, I got mine from calgary and if i were to bring it to a shop the way it was right when i got it, it would have failed miserably in winnipeg.

    I'm not completely sure, but i think in alberta it's a bit easier to pass safety, i know they don't require dot tail lights, thats what i was told by my seller at least.

    man now thats two OPINION based answers you've given me, i just want to know if there are safeties in alberta its a yes or no question and now you've given multiple useless responses. i'm not trying to be a jerk but it seems like everyone on the forum is a mind reader and knows what everyone else is after. i understand it doesn't show the quality of the car, but if they don't have inspections there it could have been beat by multiple owners, out here thats hard to do you must re cert after each change.

    and the answer is NO NO safeties in alberta only if the cars coming from out of province will you need a safety

    lol I gave you no opinion based answers.

    Your question was is there safeties in alberta and how strict are they? I couldn't tell you for sure if you need them but i'm under the impression that anywhere in canada when a vehicle changes ownership you need it to be safetied to register it.

    As for the strict part, I tried to share my experience with you to give you and answer. I said that my car, which had passed alberta safety, would not pass here in manitoba...meaning that alberta must be a little bit easier than other places...i also threw in that they don't need dot tail lights...this should have also been a hint.

    And finally I only stated that a car being plated or safetied several times has nothing to do with it's condition because you had said "this information would just give me an idea of the cars condition"

    no ones picking your brain...i was just trying to help.

    i know i was kinda being a douche, but yea from what i've found it says in alberta the car only needs a safety when it comes from out of province.

    from what the link states it seems like inspections are only needed if the car falls under certain criteria. but what do i know its on a confusing government page with legal speak.

    out of province or salvage insurance write off ect
    said link-----> http://www.transportation.alberta.ca/2818.htm

    it would be nice if someone from alberta could just step in here and give some concrete info

    You need a safety inspection if the vehicle is older than XX years. I cant remember if its 10 or 15, but yea.
