  • *INFO* Checking your Skyline for its ecu fault Codes

Here is some info on checking your ecu for fault codes if you are having any problems with them.

This is for nissans from 1988-1994, altough i think its the same for 1994 models and up

The ECU is located on the passenger side, in the side panel beside your left foot when you are seated in the car.

    ECCS has 5 modes :

Mode 1 - Exhaust Gas Sensor monitor.

When the engine is warm (closed loop) the green led turns on for lean, off for rich. It should alternate. When it is cold (open loop) it will be either on or off.

Mode 2 - Mixture ratio feedback control monitor.

During closed loop operation the red led should turn on and off simultaneously with the green led when the mixture is controlled within the specified values. During open loop the red led stays on or off.

Mode 3 - Self Diagnosis. See below

    Mode 4 - Switches On/Off diagnosis.

The inspection lamp monitors the idle switch portion of the throttle valve switch, the starter switch, vehicle speed sensor an other switches with an on/off condition.

Mode 5 - Real Time diagnosis.

Same as Mode 3, but it flashes the errors as they occur.

To select the various modes :

With the ignition ON take a small screwdriver and turn it clockwise. the LED's will flash together, first once, then pause, then twice, then pause, then three times. When this happens turn the screwdriver counter clockwise. The ECU is now in mode 3 which reads out the fault codes on the LED's. It will cycle through all stored fault codes.

    Red LED = 10
    Green = 1

If the red led flashes 4 times and the green one flashes 5 times that means you have code 45. It will repeat this if this is the only fault. If there are more faults it will flash all the faults and repeat.

The ECU will reset when you turn the ignition off.

Where did you get this info from?
According to alldata, and personally having extract diagnostic trouble codes from the ECU on my gt-r, there is only 1 green LED and 2 operating modes- check engine lamp self test, and self-diagnostic mode.

The trouble codes are the same for all nissans i believe.

i just took the kick panel off and exposed my ECU, and there is no LED that i can see on it. is it hiding somewhere around the area, or is it on the ECU itself?

There is a small hole next to the diagnostic screw. In this hole you'll find the Leds.

i have a 95 gtst and mines not under the right foot kick panel. i looked in the trunk where someone else said to look and on the top under by the speakers theres a metal type box that looks like it is the ecu but theres no markings on it. is this it?

left foot panel passenger side, the one in the trunk is another controller
understeer -is when you go off the road and see the tree that kills you

R33 ATTESA ECU - the Hicas ECU is above it.

The picture is gone, I need the picture...

I don't know what screw to turn, where the screw is, nothing like that at all...

i only seem to have a red LED in my ECU it will flash 4 then 1, but will not go into diagnostic mode as it should according to this thread. and it will only flash when the screw is counter clockwise of about half.

There's only one screw on the back of the ECU. There's also a single red LED on that same side of the box.

An error code of 41 would have 4 long flashes, followed by 1 short flash. Then a pause, and it will repeat. If there is more than one error code, they will all be displayed, and then a pause, and repeat.

yeah i figured it out. my intake air temp sensor was unplugged (41) but with it conected i get a 55 (no errors) and the car still runs like complete ****, i'm going to try a vacuum leak test tomorrow.
