Test Pipe Questions...

So I love the note of my exhaust but it's pretty quiet and I was hoping to open it up a bit more. I've decided I will likely go with a test pipe over the high-flow cat.

I've got a 3" cat-back Regu-R exhaust on it now. I just wanted to ask about previous experiences. Obviously if someone has the same or similar exhaust with a test pipe that would be ideal, but this is very unlikely to happen.

My main concerns are that I don't want to lose my existing note and get something really raspy. I also like my neighbours, and don't wanna piss them off by letting an obnoxiously loud car cool down on my turbo timer and wake up to a keyed car one day.

And do you guys think these (http://www.pdm-racing.com/products/exhaust.html#csdp) will fit ok? I think I might actually have a good find there... prices seem half decent. I was thinking the mild steel straight pipe versus the polished ones... (just above the one that shows up when you click the link) I mean for $50 I guess the worst that could happen would be I take it off and re-sell it.

Oh, and I considered a high-flow, but they're more expensive, I don't need aircare until sometime in 2011, and I'll keep my existing cat for when I do go back...

Input anyone? I searched and heard some amazing sounding exhausts, but wanted to hear some personal input/stories about neighbours/notes/results from test pipes.

From my experience, test pipes on RB powered cars are a great thing, it's not too much louder and it sounds much more aggressive. Mine is not raspy at all.

What make of high flow cat do you have? I'll trade you for my fujitsubo cat delete pipe. fit right in there. My car is too loud and I'm also a tree huggin clown who wants to reduce his carbon foot print. lol

hahaha I don't have a highflow cat from what I understand. Just a cat-back. Might consider cash plus my stock one if you're interested. Otherwise check out that link I posted in the first thread. They sell them at a decent price... and I could always buy yours to help soften the blow....

If you really want to make sure it isn't raspy, replace the cat with a weld-in resonator.

i got a test pipe off ebay, ours is the same as a 240sx. Dirt cheap, it's only a pipe with 2 flanges, save some money. I got one that is resonated and my exhaust is noticeably quieter.

I think that one is a bit smaller then 80mm, no? I'm not sure what "mild steel" means, but I'd be careful with rust. If you are looking for a cheap straight pipe I guess that would be the ticket.

I was going through the website last night looking for contact... There shop is 10 minutes away from SFU where I live haha.

to be honest i dont think there is any way possible to make a RB sound bad...

straight pipes on rb26's and stock turbos sound terrible. too raspy and not quiet.

I have a test pipe, unknown resonator and straight through muffler and my GTR sounds like a freakin' *****. It's deep sounding but it ain't loud and doesn't sound like a RB at all

just as a reference, my exhaust is:

Divorced dump pipe -> 3" SS downpipe -> 3" resonated test pipe -> 3" cat back into a 3.75" straight muffler.

You've heard it already so just for your reference.

If I were you I'd spend the extra 15 bux and get the stainless steel and worry less about corrosion in the long run.

Stainless still rusts, but at a much lower rate than mild steel. Mild steel is the same quality steel as OEM battery tie downs.

Well, since I found my turn signal, and saved myself a nifty $80 I will be going polished.

Hopefully it sounds good. Otherwise I will put it up for sale and go for a hi-flow cat. Hoping to pick it up Sunday. After the meet but whatever... its for my enjoyment anyways!

I have the Apexi catback on my car.
It's fairly quiet to begin with (has a resonator AND a thru muffler)
I didn't really notice much of a change in sound at all when I replaced the OEM cat with a delete pipe.
I think it depends a lot on the exhaust you already have.
They do improve flow though, I immediatly noticed my turbo spooled quicker and the butt dyno felt it.
