  • Viper VS Compustar

Its going to be my time to get my skyline here, and one of the first "upgrades" i want to do is an alarm system

Now pretty much Compustar and Viper are the tops dogs in this category.

Which one do you use/prefer. And any specific models i should be looking at

    Thanks

My car came with a viper system, the fob plays a crazy asian song when you put in a new battery - I like it.

For features and quality, compustar by a long shot.

      shouldn't even be a question.

          I <3 my compustar.

however, do know that your alarm is only as good as its installation.

They both really have there high's and lows. I like the ability of 2 way paging systems and i won't buy anything with less than what the manufactures call a 1 mile range. I had one of those 1/4 mile range systems and i would loose signal in every building i went into.

I currently have a Viper in my truck works great never had an issue. Havn't decided yet if i'm willing to try a compustar in my skyline yet. I like to stick to what i know works well haha.

I heard that compustar's "brain" is an issue, even my cousin has gone back to fix it...luckily it's lifetime warranty with the shop. I heard good things about CLIFFORD and of course viper has been around forever.

I probably will be going with the VIPER or CLIFFORD...but I'm not gonna lie...I'm a sucker for a good looking 2 way paging design of the compustar lol.

Well. Thats the thing. I know virtually nothing about alarm systems and which ones are the best and what models to get.

Obviously it would be best to go to my local installer and see what they would recommend. But the only place that we have here (that i know of) is visions and they only carry the cheap stuff.

Looks like i might have to go to Calgary

I've had 2 compuerstars, in two different cars they have both worked flawlessly, that being said I may jump on this next.. its exactly like the compustar and more, like intelligent autotimer, keyless touch pad entry etc I'm a sucker for anything technologically new--so far the reviews have been good.

The touch pad thing looks pretty cool that comes with it.

Do you know any of the prices on them?

How new are they. Cause i don't want something brand new on my car. New technology seems to fail

the only thing that still worries me about "touch" is it's reliability and quality after years of use. Especially with the car alarms as you would be "tapping" on the touchscreen everyday.

I am currently looking into alarms as I type and my cousin also suggested viper as being par with compustar.

Just a quick note... First off, Clifford was bought out by Directed electronics several years ago, and that's the same parent company as Viper... just an fyi. I carry both brands lol, so I'm not that biased, but I like the Viper, and use it in my own cars... The Compustar stuff seems to be generally quite good, I don't have any real problems with it except the cheap Remote starters (starters only!) seem to drop the remote's programming now and again... Compustar has more bells and whistles, but some of them aren't really security related, more convenience/cool kinda stuff. I chose security first, but it's up to the individual for what matters most... Futureshop carries both brands, if you check out the website you can do some comparing...

Just make sure you do a proper install, with all black wires. Mount your brain in a hidden location and stuff your siren under the ABS module and make the wires VERY hard to reach with snippers. None of this speaker wire, zap strap, quick connect ********. Solder and heat shrink everything.

I plan on having a professional place do it. I don't care about the extra cost. I want it done right

                              i currently have 4 clifford alarms - 2x 3.3x's, and 2x 50.7x.

what i don't like is the clifford remotes are painted silver so it scratches off very easily and wear out fast. if they sold skins or cases for them (they don't exist), i would be happier.

also the 3.3x 2 way remote goes thru 2x 2016 batteries every 3 months. very annoying. not a fan of the ghost LED's either. you need a book to figure out what they mean and that book is very poorly written. navigating through the menu system is confusing as hell.

i had numerous issues with the 3.3x and remote starting on a 5spd car. wasn't too impressed with it as it was always confused and inconsistant. i upgraded one unit for the 50.7x which is far better.

also the 50.7x has a much improved remote with an LCD screen and rechargeable battery. i only have to charge it once a month. however, its still painted and scratched off within a week. to me, thats unacceptable.

im currently shopping for another 2 way alarm/remote start unit and will be definitely buying a different brand.
