  • My car just caught on fire :(

Not quite sure where to start. Kinda dazed still. Breathing in burning battery fumes probably isnt the best.

Around midnight my sis comes running into my room, I'm like wtf, she says "your effing car is on fire" and so I dont even think twice about it I just bail and run outside to see my gtr lighting up my driveway

Huge flames were coming out of a hole the size of a basketball and it was sizzling and making a weird crackling sound (probably the battery). I'm like "holy S&%T this is actually happening" and I run back in to grab a fire extinguisher, note for you guys: ALWAYS know where yours is at all times, as it took me longer than I would have liked to find it. Run back out and I start dosing the hole as best I could the whole time thinking "please dont let the gas lines catch fire" and telling my sis to start filling some buckets with water.

I empty the first extinguisher and the damn fire is still blazing even after seemingly going out. After I threw the first bucket of water at it and it still kept going I decided to call the fire department cause I sure as hell wasnt putting it out and didnt exactly want my car blowing up. They show up, and empty a couple extinguishers into it and manage to put it out. They said car fires tend to be very stubborn because of all the plastic/oil/gas etc.

Its amazing how much just melted away. The fire seems to have started in the fuse box as that is where the hole in the hood is, and then spread to the battery & random hoses. I have absolutely no idea why this happened and I'm glad that it wasnt worse. My sis told me after that she heard my car chirping/'howling' (alarm as it was melting) and thats what woke her up.

    My poor car.

    Sorry to hear.

Doesn't look too bad, lucky you caught it in time. Saw photo's of a Subaru showcar that burnt until there was nearly nothing.

Looks like you need new or second hand wiring loom, fuse box, hoses, battery, replacement hood, repaint engine bay, etc.

Skyline fires I've heard about are from fuel hose failure after or during thrashing. Or oil on hot exhaust manifold. Extremely rare for fuse box to be the cause. Must have been a blown fuse or fuse wasn't pushed all the way, created sparks.

                Sorry to hear about that.

Just glad that it didn't catch to the rest of the car. I'd be giving your sister huge props cause without her, you might have woken up to hot metal in your driveway instead of this.

Very lucky it didnt consume your whole car, what a drag!

You mentioned you had an alarm system - one of those thing i always sketched out on getting due to this exact occurence. I've heard of bikes catching fire, cars, you name it. We had a friend who owned a rig that caught fire, all originated from the wiring loom of the alarm system. Something to do with the proximity sensors and constant flow of power (Though very little) needed to power the system when in dormant mode. Viper alarms, though they don't like to admit it, are a battery killer, and tend to be the most volatile when it comes to the trend they've inherited as fire starters...

Yes, it's a sad day when you experience your first car fire My first car fire happened on a beater ford escort though, so I guess I can't really relate to walking out to see a GTR on fire. However, it looks like a relatively straight forward repair, which makes me think that you now have any excuse to buy a kickin' rad carbon fiber hood. And since you can do that, you might as well buy.... Well, you get the idea

well i think this officaly makes your skyline the hottest skyline on our forums... which is, in this case; not a good thing...

im glad its been saved and will live again... you should sell your hood to one of our drifters to help with the costs to get it fixed...

if i was into drifting id buy it and put it on for that "ghetto fabulous im so hot im on fire" look lol

last couple of skylines I've worked on had bad fuel lines from replacing fuel filter. The line that goes to the bottom of fuel filter gets brittle overtime and develops a small leak after changing the fuel filter. So if you have a strong smell of gas and recently changed fuel filter it doesn't hurt to check that line. It should never smell like gasoline under the hood.

What alarm system do you have?

and yes, agreeing with r3gill. When replacing fuel filter, it's a good practice to replace the line leading into and out of it also. Only costs a few bucks more.

That f*kin blows. Welcome to the GTR Rebuild club! Who was it that had the thread on their Ignition getting hot from the wiring of the alarm that the installer hacked? Read it about 5 months ago..
Dang! You got shocks, pegs... Lucky! You ever take it off any sweet jumps?

wow too bad. Will have to hold your upgrades off just so you can rebuild back to OEM lol. I hope you dont have much trouble with getting money from insurance. Hope you had fire insurance. Looks like the OEM aluminum hood doesnt hold the flames back to well
Good luck with her man. sad day
