  • Planning a small trip to the USA...

Just curious, I drive a 1991 GTS4 skyline, it has been through BC inspection, passed and is fully insured and i drive it around in Victoria with no issues.

Me and my buddy are planning a short trip to seattle, and we would like to take my car, however im unsure if that is okay?

That is basically my question, Can i drive my car to seattle and be there for a few days with no issues?

As far as i know, as long as it has passed inspection and has been plated in your region, you should be fine. It's out of seattle police' jurisdiction to say your car is unfit for the road as the vehicle has passed inspection and been plated elsewhere without hassle - of course this is within reason.. If you're sporting a massive spoiler or something that is obviously illegal, than yes they may very well pull you over, but relatively speaking there's no reason your car would be unfit to drive anywhere in the US.

If of course you're hassled for your exhaust or what not, they can't really justify the law in terms of the region it's been plated, they technically have no heresay on the issue and should let you off with the max penalty of a warning (possibly for the next time?), at best.

This is, of course from my personal experience.. I've driven into the states countless times with different vehicles - in the end the vehicle doesnt matter, as long as it meets the requirements of the region it was plated in.

I've never had a Canadian compliment my car, or talk to me in traffic regarding my car. Americans point, gawk, and try to get your attention in traffic. The only time I've ever had anyone talk to me sitting in traffic in Canada was an American from washington in a turbo pt cruiser. lol

People down in the states also seem to make eye contact more when stopped in traffic, everyone in/around vancouver is so damn apathetic and afraid of everyone in the car next to them.

Honestly, no worries driving in the states, just accept that you'll probably get hassled/stared at lots more. That's my experience, anyhow.

Keep an eye on it too.. Not familiar with seattle but i sure as hell wouldn't leave my car parked out on the street overnight in NY for instance.. I've had enough bad experiences in montreal with stupidity..

I have an R32 in California and it's the opposite, people are always staring. Just the other day I came out to the car with a note on it saying this guy wanted to do a photoshoot of it. A few hours later I came out of another store and people were taking pictures. It's seriously an every day event with people staring and taking pictures, you must drive too fast for them to notice you

Speaking of small trips; anyone ever venture from the east coast to say.... Cali? I'm planning on doing this, maybe this summer for a couple of months.. To say the least i think it's more of a voyage than i'm willing to tackle (something like 5500 km from Montreal?). Would be sick to have my car with me though! Something we DONT get to enjoy here in Quebec are nice roads; something i'd be able to take advantage of for oh.. 10,000 km.

                  Any input guys?

Change your oil before you go, change it over there, and change it once you get back.

I'm planning on doing a route 66 trip this summer. Stay in small towns, take my time, go to coffee and cars (google it ) while I'm down there and then come back. Should be fun.

Nice, I did a trip from Calgary to Seattle in June/July this summer in my GT-R and I had no problems. Actually, it was kinda funny, at one point we were driving behind this green mustang (late 90's model I believe), with some kids in it. Suddenly they start freaking out when they see my car and the guys in the back seat are taking pictures and whatnot, haha.

So I'm sure my car now has randomly posted pictures on facebook

Other than that one occurrence, never really had any issues. Oh, make sure your friend is with you when you cross the border, makes it much easier (thankfully my friend wanted to do the drive down as well, so she was able to pass the passports to the border official and whatnot.

sweet, sounds like ill be fine, I just wanted to make sure there was nothing illegal about driving my car in the US, last thing i wanted was to get pulled over and the cop tell me "your car is illegal to be driven here" and then impound it lol. anyways just did a fresh oil change on the car after work and I leave saturday morning thanks again

i go across the border every few days in my r33,
the worst i get is getting sent in and having them search my car.
usually while talking to me they get my to shut the car off cause apparently my exhaust is too loud for them,, *rolls eyes
my car doesnt have drls and they dont care.

                            you'll be fine.
I love the thing and its worth it every time I start it. As soon as it stops make me smile ill get rid of it (not gonna happen)

no problems man.. .don't worry about it. they don't give a ****. it's a road legal Canadian car, they can't deny you entry.

I did a 3 week roadtrip in a GTR and all we got were weird looks from people in other cars.
