  • New here and have a few questions

Hi guys, I'm Don. I lurked the forums here for a while and joined last week when I was finally ready to buy my '91 GTR. I didn't want to clutter up the boards with a bunch of stupid question threads so I figured I'd introduce myself and ask them all here. I searched all of these questions first, I'm new to skylines but not car forums.

    1) Has anyone seen a r32 gtr owners manual online? I already downloaded the 800 page service manual (thanks for the links) but I would like to see (rather not buy) a english version of the original owners manual. The car is new to me and I'd like to know what all the warning lights on the dash mean as well as the little controls and doodads.

    2) My car has slightly bigger than stock turbos, with what seems to be important; steel turbine wheels. It also has pod filters, turbo back exhaust and a Blitz ECU. I've been trying to look into tuning options for a while and they all seem a little pricey, I'm wondering if my car could benefit from a electronic boost controller? It was dyno'd aleady and made 300rwhp and it's clearly rich (i wont know how rich until I install my inovate wideband next week) so it would seem like I could run more boost safely.

    3) Is there a thread on here with a list of known nissan interchangeability parts? Like 300ZX brake pads fit r32s etc?
    - I need to replace the the steering rack boots and front upper control arm bushings, so I'm curious what parts I can get at my local US parts stores (im guessing not many).

    4) I would like to install a steering wheel disconnect, I'm 6'2" and 250lbs and getting in the car is a chore with the wheel not tilting. Is there any good quality units or there you could recommend to me? From searching it seems like the hub needs to work with the HICAS right?

Mods I'm sorry if this thread is out of place, it seemed like general worked best. I appreciate any help guys, this forum seems like a nice group of people.

    Thanks- Don

    1) I've been looking online for one aswell but decided to just order one from Australia and be done with it (hasn't arrived yet). There isn't any question you could have that you're not going to find an answer to on here. Consider this your online owners manual?

2)Tough one to answer without knowing more details on the car. If it has a Blitz ecu I'd suggest finding out more about it's capabilities. Your going down the right path by puttin in your wideband. You MIGHT be able to run more boost safely but I'd sooner find out what your a/f ratio is and where. Then you can maybe pull some fuel and/or add some timing. Keep in mind more boost works the turbos harder and increases cylinder pressures. If you don't exactly what the build is you could end up causing damage.

3)There are SO many parts available online. See the sponsers links on the main page. You're lucky enough to be south of the border so dealing with some US suppliers will be easier for you.
You are correct. There are SO many interchagable parts and if you do searches and check the different threads you will find out what parts you can get from your local parts supplier.

4)The detachable steering hub won't have any affect on the HICAS. Any hub will work as long as it will work for the R32 hub. There are a few people on here that have used them and will surely pass along more info.

    Welcome to GTRC!!!

A little clarification on the Hub that Bobbo was misinformed about. There are two variations of hubs for the R32, hicas and Non-hicas. If you want to keep your hicas operational, get the hicas specific one. As long as the hub is hicas compatible, then it really doesn't matter if its quick release or not.

Thanks for the replies. Another question I had was regarding Nistune, does anyone here run it? It looks like I have to buy a stock ECU first then send it out to have it modified correct? Whats the going rate for a stock BNR32 ECU? I only have one tuner in Michigan and when I called him today he said he wouldn't touch the car unless I installed AEM's system which appears to be 2k+. I don't mind spending money on the hobby I love, but I'm not looking to burn giant piles of cash either, if a 400 dollar option works as well as a 2000 one then I might as well learn to tune myself and pocket 1600.

There's gotta be a tuner near you that will work with that ECU. Just keep looking around... poke around some local forums and tracks. A lot of guys at track events in your area will be very knowledgeable about good tuners and shops in your area.

          Congrats on the new car
DISCLAIMER: If any of the above comments in this post hurt your feelings you are likely taking me too seriously; I'm probably just busting your balls. If you're unsure, feel free to PM me and we can discuss the matter privately, as to not pull the thread OT.

A closed minded tuner sometimes means he's only good at that one ECU which isn't always the best answer. A tuner should be able to learn any system (unless it's secret like HKS) and tune it right.

Well I'm pretty sure the ecu I have currently isn't tunable. But I'd be happy to just find a tuner willing to work with something less expensive than AEM like Nistune. After I posted this thread it hit me that my experience in dealing with performance shops/tuners is all from owning Subaru's and Audi's which require AWD dyno's (much harder to find here). I'll do some hunting and maybe I can find someone semi-local that can help. Thanks for the congrats, this is probably the most excited I've ever been about a car!

That makes sense, I wondered that myself. Maybe they're lazy, or maybe they just really want me to drop 2k on a ECU from them...

                steering hub

just to touch up on steering hubs. if you want to install a quik disconnecting hub or after market wheel for that matter you have to be sure of the generation of hicas you have. feature wise i believe they are the same. however you have to pay attention to the 2 tabs that that interface with the original steering wheel( steering angle sensor) which will have to interface with the new hub. IE if you going with hkb steering wheel hub. you will need either the hkb on-110, on-111 or the on-115

What does an explanation point symbol on my dash mean? Is that like a check engine? How can I read/clear it?

Haha, well the username has been my username for years on every forum I frequent. But that doesn't really answer my question, I searched but can't seem to find what the symbols on the dash means (one of the reasons my OP asked about owners manuals) or how to read trouble codes on this car. Forgive my ignorance to this car, it's my first GTR and I don't have anyone to answer these simple questions other than you guys.

                          Its your brake light

means your handbrake is up or you are low on brake fluid

                          Its brake related

or on other nissans it means: when its on during driving it indicates alternator failure.
