  • Auto to 5 spd

    Hey,

Alright, lets start off by saying I made a HUGE mistake 2 years ago. I bought a 92 gts-t type m with and auto transmission. The thing is I assumed it was a 5 spd but when it arrived I realized the mistake. (BTW my dad bought this car as it was my first)

So here is my problem. I need to know how much it will cost to switch it, will I need to retune the ecu? Is there anything else I need to know?

Love the car but I'm getting very bored with this Auto part lol. Help me out please!

    Thanks!

Not a huge mistake. Good thing with auto chassis, is R33 RB25DET gearbox bolts in, even uses stock crossmember (S13?), rear gearbox mount. On manual chassis it's way out and requires custom crossmember. So you are lucky to have a auto chassis, as can go bigger, better with engine (RB26 or RB30), drivetrain to suit (R33 RB25DET gearbox, etc) if you want to later on.

    For RB20DET gearbox -

S13 / 240sx manual?? crossmember, rear manual gearbox mount
RB20DET Gearbox, bolts, brass looking bellhousing plate thingy gasket.
Manual clutch slave, master cylinders, bolts.
Manual clutch pedal, manual brake pedal (some cut auto brake pedal to size), bolts.
    Manual flywheel, bolts.
Manual spigot bush from Nissan (auto spigot bush needs to be removed and some find it a pain to remove)
Manual (upgraded) clutch with new pressure plate, disc (Excedy, Nismo, etc).
Leather, plastic clip in gearstick boot cover for manual gearstick, boot that goes under it.
Dash pieces to remove auto, park, etc selector on dash (left side of steering wheel)
Manual driveshaft (or front part / yoke of manual driveshaft, as the rear section on auto, manual driveshaft's are the same)
Manual speedo cable (can't remember if they are the same and auto speedo cable can be used on manual trans).

Basic conversion kit mentioned above should cost 1.0-1.5K or less (if you find a crashed manual chassis locally at wrecker, strip it of parts), excluding buying new clutch, as sometimes stock clutch is in fairly good condition and is supplied in kit.

    Then there's -

Wiring for reverse lights, neutral switch / inhibitor to start engine, as auto only starts in neutral, park (plugs near fuse box in engine bay, bridge two plugs with wire).

ECU needs to adjusted on tables for TPS x2, otherwise revs flares when returning to idle. Nistune for stock ECU will allow you to do these changes to tables x2 (have to use the same info on both tables on manual ECU). On auto they have different info on both tables). Some cut wire to TPS, but proper / cleaner way is via adjusting tables on ECU. Or buy a manual ECU.

Adjust CAS to manual ECU settings of 15 degress BTDC at 650rpm vs auto ECU settings at 20 degress BTDC at 650rpm. Some leave the auto ECU in place and use auto ECU CAS settings, as provides better pickup at bottomend.

I have a R34 GTT RB25 transmission, 1pcs driveshaft made for AT R32 with the rb25 tranny, also the crossmember need for the swap. All you need is a clutch master, clutch pedal.

Wouldn't it just be easier to sell this car and purchase a 5spd GTS-T Type M?

To tell you the truth it would be, however I don't know how you guys feel about your cars but I don't know if I can part with it. It has sentimental value. Also the car is in fantastic shape overall! Basically mint interior and just got repainted. So even if I loose my money I really could care less.

If that makes any sense haha.

You can get conversion kits cheaper. Price above is the price downunder for conversion kit, but your looking at around $750-$1128 CAD. Gearbox cost's around half the cost.

Stick with the auto and drop an RB30 into her. With a manual valve body and a higher stall converter I promise you that nothing will touch you on the street with some Drag Radials bolted on under your ass.

Nothing is faster than a properly set up slushbox, not even a double clutch, flappy paddle tranny.
