  • Winterizing a Water Meth Kit

Hey guys, I have a snow performance stage 2 water meth kit. Wondering how to winterize it. I currently running a 50/50 mix in it. Should i run all that out of it and put some straight meth in? Or do i leave it alone? or do i run it until the pump runs dry?

    lmk
    Thanks Brian

I'm just going to run straight meth threw mine, 50/50 should be good but I've heard it will still freeze up in the lines when it gets really cold.

i'm mostly worried about damaging the pump and lines do to the water expansion during freezing. My other dilemma is whats worse the meth freezing in the pump or leaving straight meth sitting in the pump

Is there any way to completly empty the system ? Staight methanol has a freezing point of -98c we use it at work religously during the winter. I can also tell you it is hard on rubber seals when left in pumps for a long time - our industrial meth pumps are designed in a way that allows us to rebuild the pressure end of the pump in less then 5 minutes to replace seals and o-rings. the rest of the system is stainless so no worries there since meth in non corrosive. To be completly safe why not remove the resevoir and pump and blow the remaining lines out with air ? non sure of how it is set up or how difficult that may be. I will be installing my water meth kit this winter maybe you can pm and let me know what you think ?

            Cheers

that actually might not be a bad idea, not sure how good it would be for the pump blowing it out but may work

May be a dumb question... but could you just disconnect the nozzle and run some anti freeze through it?

Dont blow the pump out. Can you remove the discharge hose from the pump and drain both sides that way ?

Hozer, that would be a good idea if you could disconnect from the intake so your not pumping antifreez into your intake but I cant see why that wouldnt work

Why would you want watermeth in winter? All I do is purge the lines with 100% meth and leave my car in my heated garage all winter

What brand unit do you have. Read that leaving 100% meth in it can damage pump seals etc

So i did some research on meth and pure meth freezes at -93 degrees celcius. With a 50 50 mix its still good for -50. Long story short don't need to worry about it. Just leave it be.

Freezing and flash points for methanol or methyl based heat-transfer fluids or brines.

I mentioned earlier the freezing point of pure meth, also when we dilute meth with water it has still proven to be harmful on pump seals. Im not sure the exact concentration of water to meth that you would need to dilute the formula to a point where it is not harmful to seals and gaskets. Is it a difficult process to remove the resevoir and blow compressed air through the remaining lines to remove any moisture ?

I had AEM, decided to go with the expensive aquamist cause I like their reservoirs.

Meth pump seals are designed to have meth in them. Most are designed to have a 50/50 mix with no issues at all. Once you start running 100% meth is when issues potentially start to arise.
