  • What an excellent explanation!

Well, I saw this vid online a while back when i was searching for an explanation as to how differentials work?... thought you all might like to have a look at the video but then i have some questions!

Whats the difference between an OEM R32 GTR diff, a nismo 1.5 way and nismo 2 way?

    what do the "ways" mean?

Full video can be found here for anyone interested:

Also, here is some info on your question.

Hi everyone, What are the different applications for 1.5 way and 2 way LSD? I've heard 1.5 way is "safer" and easier to use, and 2 way is for more aggressive driving and wide angle drifting...but if you are upgrading your LSD, why choose one over the other? I want something I can learn to...

"way" just describes how it will lock. A 2 way LSD is the most "locked". It's similar to a welded dif. It'll lock on acceleration, decelartion, and cornering.

A 1.5 way LSD will only on acceleration and cornering if I'm not mistaken.

I'm not sure of the stock GTR LSD, but with the GTS-ts, they had a VLSD from factory. A VLSD is filled with a thick, viscous fluid, which is were the term "viscous" LSD comes from. VLSDs are great from factory, but after about 80 000km they get worn out and act more like an open dif. You can shim a VLSD to make it act like a 1.5 or 2way dif, depending on the size of the shim you use.

        Hope this helps!

Wow. They should teach like that far more often! That was incredibly informative, and less than 10 min long! I love quick lessons where I learn more than in 1+ hr. lessons :P

ATS website has a few good pics
            "LSD activation mechanism - 1 way, 1.5 way, & 2 way"
ATS has been developing performance parts since 1995 and its drive train parts are well known throughout the performance industry. PPI is the exclusive distributor for ATS performance parts in the North America

Nismo states their 2way "cam angles" are 55/45 degrees and 1.5's are 55/1 degrees.

Some LSDs can be rebuilt for 1.5 or 2 depending on how it's configured. Check out the exploded view... "Pressure Ring" has 8 cams but the “Pinion Mate” only requires 4. If you rotate the pressure ring 45 degree relative to the pinion mate it changes from 1.5 to 2. Check with the manufacture before ordering. Not all LSDs have this feature.

Nismo's Pro has an externally adjustable tensioner (others require rebuild with different shims) that sets the initial torque.
