  • Buying a Skyline

    Hi everyone
After a long time of saving up my money now, I am going to buy a R33 GT-R! (I posted a thread quite a while ago about this shop advising me not to get it because ALL RB26DETT they've worked on had rod knock... turns out, they haven't even worked on that many RB26DETT and they are now closed, rumor has it they took on too many projects that they can't even handle hahahaha)
I just had some questions about the process of actually buying one
Is this correct? (after checking the car is mechanically sound)
    1. transfer the money
    2. complete the bill of sales
    3. go get insurance
    4. get it registered (I think I need a Vehicle Import Form and Inspection Certificate to get registration, but the guy said it was all good to drive in Alberta so does that mean he would have these 2 forms completed?)
Also, I was wondering about some insurance companies in Calgary that you guys would recommend for RHD cars. I had a link saved from a long time ago but I can't seem to find it and I've used the search, nothing is turning up.
    Thanks,
    Albert

I'll be posting the insurance rates I was quoted based on my driver statistics
    19 years old
    Class 5 issued April 16, 2009
Insured under my parents for approximately 2 years
    Driver Training Certificate (DTC) obtained
    Clean driving record
***I'm only going to be driving the vehicle for 4-5 months/year but I cannot put the vehicle on park and save some money as it will be parked on public property and the law states it needs liability even if it is not being driven***

RSA Insurance Group (spoke in person)
    GRID Rated w/ DTC
    85% (-15% due to DTC) + Accident/Benefit
    $1537.00/year FOR LIABILITY ONLY ($128.08/month)
They do not offer comprehensive or collision

State Farm (spoke over the phone)
    $133.73/month FOR LIABILITY ONLY
That is with the good student discount (grade of 65% or over)
They do not offer comprehensive or collision

Lundgren & Young (spoke over the phone, my parents are insured here)
    $1600/year FOR LIABILITY ONLY ($133.33/month)
They do not offer comprehensive or collision

    TD Insurance Meloche Monnex
    $1650/year FOR LIABILITY & COMPREHENSIVE ($137.50/month)
That is with the University of Calgary discount
    They offer collision as well

Sorry i can't comment on process of importation since I bought my GTR already landed
however I can suggest a Insurance Company: TD meloche monnex
I am personally with them and so are my parents they seem to like them.
I paid $1800 first year of ownership and then now about $1600 and this is only with Liability and Theft/Fire/Vandal, etc.
They did offer me comprehensive was about $2500+ ...not bad but couldn't afford at the time.
The above quote doesn't look too bad imo but hey gotta pay to play right :P
      Good Luck on the purchase

          @GTRDemon, isn't theft/fire/vandal = comprehensive?

@trickey1991, hmm according to this website http://www.servicealberta.gov.ab.ca/577.cfm I need to get insurance before I can register the car
it might be different in Ontario though

No, They allow you to add other additional coverage and for my case I added the above.
Well thats what the case was for me 2 years ago lol
On there website i think it is listed as "limited coverage"
              http://www.melochemonnex.com/en/car-...ional-coverage

              Hope that helps

Wait, wtf, Meloche didn't want to cover my GTR right after I said "skyline". You're insuring your RHD with them? What did you tell them so that they'd cover you?

LOL I just told them 1991 Skyline GTR and thats it
I actually have no idea but I have insurance coverage from them and this year will be my 3rd year :P
All they asked for was a measly insurance car inspection (the one where the guy just looks at your lights, brakes, exterior etc. but NOT full vehicle inspection) and passed with flying colors, the guy who inspected was even impressed at the condition of my car as he said he hates RHD and most are rusty **** boxes

@ Marus92, when I was getting a quote from the person over the phone, the guy didn't reject after I said 95 Nissan Skyline GTR
If anything, he sounded a bit confused, paused for a minute or two, then said "so 95 Nissan Skyline right?"
I just said yes and he proceeded to ask for other details, I got an account setup and everything so if I wanted to, I could just activate that right now

I was doing it through the phone just a few months ago. At first everything checked out. But then she said "Skyline" out loud and paused, put me on hold for a sec, and then came back telling me that a guy in the office had just heard her and said they don't insure imports for some ******** reason so she refused to insure me, even if it was minimum coverage.

I called again today. Was flat out refused, escalated, refused. Canada-wide policy (exempt BC because they don't insure cars there).
