  • 5 RHD refused entry at NY border for car show

Heads up boys. 5 of us with various RHD cars were refused entry into the US yesterday.
We were heading to the import show in Carlisle PA. Our customs agent let the first guy through in the line but someone else noticed a RHD driving past and they sent two chase cars after him. The rest of us got pulled over and the justification goes like this.
"Not safe, no dot stamp on headlights and all the critical safety items, like brakes etc.
RHD are illegal in the states. The only reason people bring them over to the states is to sell them."

We could have got across if we got some sort of waiver from a broker which is like a bail bond, if we sell the car the broker looses the money. We were told it was about $500 to get one of these policies from a broker.

There really wasnt much we could at the time. You cant argue with ignorance and the misinterpetation of the rules. This guy was treating importing and visiting with the same rules.
Needless to say the weather was goin to be lousy anyway so not a write off but we lost 600 bucks in hotel fees.

Just a heads to you guys going down that if you get the right "RHD Specialist" at your border crossing you could be in for a bad day.

If anyone has any information on a way to complaint to the american government agency let me know. I'm going to check the website now.

So the point is there is nothing we could say to the

Dude, that's mad lame. Gotta love border guards and they're "extreme knowledge of the law". I mean, there's lots of decent guards out there that know they're stuff, but there always has to be one...

We had the same problem going over in a civic SIR. Me and my buddy when down when I was in Winnipeg a few weeks ago and when we got to the border we had to go all the ways back and get my car because "With the steering wheel on that side you are a danger to other drivers. Thus we can't let you threw, your going to have to get a non-imported car and come back"

what you need is a fake steering wheel in the passenger side and get the passenger there to hold it. if they ask , just tell the border guard the wheel on the right is a fake and the "passenger" is mentally challenged and wont get in the car unless they have their toy steering wheel on the dash

Today seems to be a fun day for RHD cars in the country... Car-ism! Let's take them all to court

Honestly, the best part about that is that they said RHD is illegal and dangerous... Yet RHD is legal in the united states

Great, I'm planning on attending Tyndago's wedding in DC this June.

Have to take the GT-R, it is a themed wedding "GT-R vs. Corvette"

The border is such a joke both ways, no standardization and its all about $$$ not safety

Yikes...turning out to be a crappy weekend for us. I'd be interested to know whether anyone in BC has problems now. Have the border guards been given blanket instructions across all crossing points to restrict access recently?

Everyone should go out and give it a go. I told my buddy in NB about it today and he's going to try and bring his RHD over sometime this week for shopping. He was going to take his "Normal safe and non dangerious" car, but after speaking with him he's going to give the RHD a try for a laugh. I'll post when I find out what happens

yea i got one guy once. keep in mind i go accross about 4 times a month atleast i have family on both sides of the border and this one time on a sunday as soon as i pulled up the guy said a skyline! i was like o no. anyway he sent me inside and i was there for two hours and basically they denied me access because they were sure i was going to sell it in the us and it was not safe enough for their roads. they never gave me the option of sigining any form saying i wouldnt sell it or anything. just searched my entire car gave me **** for two hours then turned me around

I wonder how many people brought there JDM car to the USA and sell it. It appears the USA customs is starting to crack down.
