  • Aspiring Skyline owner with some concerns

    Hey all,

I am not a Skyline owner yet, but I joined up on the forums to try to get some insight before making a purchase.

One main concern that I have is that the car I am looking at has some aftermarkey mods already done to it. Stuff like the intake, exhaust, suspension, etc... I will be perfectly honest and say that I dont know much about car maintenance, but I love the GTR and want to learn. What should I look out for before buying? Any modifications in particular that can be sketchy on a used car?

Totally n00b post, i know, but just looking for some good advice.

Jordan, you'll get flamed and get b*tch for starting threads like this on here...most of the guys here wont' help you. Most of them are jack a*sses who think they know everything cause they own a GTR.

Even the mods gangs up on you too. Everybody has to start somewhere. but this place isn't one.

THEY ALWAYS SAY, "THEY HAVE HUNDREDS OF THREADS" BLA BLA BLA...BUT WHEN U SEARCH THERE'S PRACTICALLY NONE AND THE ANSWERS U NEED AINT THERE.

In quick google searches I've come up with,

http://forums.gtrcanada.com/faq/2021...ne-gtr-15.html <-- THIS IS STICKIED IN THE GTR SECTION

Welcome to the forums Jordan, Skylines are awesome cars to own but don't expect them to be 100% reliable. Look around at different cars and research before you buy. There are plenty of options available out there and shipping a gem from afar can be better then picking up a bomb locally.

Your best bet is to get a mechanic to check it over, get a compression test on all 6 cylinders and see if there are any maintenance records.

There are some absolute gems out there but there are some rat bagged ones as well. Alot of people buy these cars and end up pouring 3-7k into an engine rebuild, some buy them and just do basic oil changes/maintenance. (also covered in hundreds of threads if you google a bit)

Some mods are there to help an engine like a FMIC (front mount intercooler), upgraded blow off valves, aftermarket intakes, higher flow fuel pumps. The mods you want to be weary about an unknown owner are aftermarket ECU's, upgraded injectors, bigger turbos. Most people like to do those themselves from a stock setup knowing what they are starting with and plan it properly. (also covered in hundreds of threads if you google a bit)

Enjoy the Skyline if you do buy one, I do every time I drive mine.

                  Welcome to the boards Jordan.

As COMPLETELY AND 100% OPPOSED to what Mr. NON SkylineGenious said, I started here and it was fine.
If you dont wanna search, just have a look around. There is a FAQ section, AMAZING place to start with a wealth of information.
If you have SPECIFIC questions like how do I attach a specific part and such, almost everyone will be willing to help you.
However if you are going to ask such questions as what is Spooling and is it needed for boost....well then maybe you should not own a skyline.
Anyway, Most of us are here to help, so good luck!

Why hasn't that "genius" been banned yet is my question. Ask a dumb question, get a dumb answer.....
As for Jordan, just browse around a while. You don't even need to use the "search". The topics and forum sections are well labelled. I lurked for nearly a year, just reading, before I bought my car, or even joined the site officially.
There is TONS of information here, just don't expect everyone else to do the legwork for you.
Trust me, you can't be the lazy type and own one of these cars anyways, it won't work out.

We've all been there, I certainly have (and probably more than once). The best advice I can give you is don't buy the first one you look at, shop around. There's gems out there, and total shitters. As far as mods go, they're pretty cheap and easy these days.

All I can say is if you buy a GTR, don't buy a fancy aftermarket intercooler, the oem cooler works great. Thanks to rampant design theft, exhausts, intakes, and pretty much most other bolt ons are cheap. Just don't cheap out in the wrong areas!

Jordan, don't listen to this tool, we are more than happy to help out with Skyline specific questions. Basic "how does an engine work" questions are not really welcome because, for the most part, you should already know this stuff if you want to own a 15+ year old car (Skyline or not). You should really have a good grasp on basic mechanics if you want to own a Skyline, not because they are some sort of magical, unreliable PITA, but just for the fact that they are all OLD CARS. If you are lucky and bide your time to find a really good car you won't have many issues. These cars, even in their worst condition are still much better than any local car of that age. Very few are rusty and most have had regular service.

Oh yea, as an ex-WinterPegger, welcome to the forum.....

How old are you? Don't you realize that this site has been up for half a decade? Think about it. GTRC combined with SAU (that's Skylines Australia) and GTROC (GTR UK) have amassed an incredible body of data. The search function is broken but there's a FAQ thread for quick (gasp) answers to questions. Lately I've seen a shift from senior members selling their cars to the site getting a big influx of noobs (myself included). Veterans are just getting stretched thin.

Get your head out of bee-hind. You need help IRL if you're not a troll. Oh, and the mods politely took a bite out of your ass AFTER you called us homosexuals, remember?
