  • What is wrong with my car!?

Ok so I drive a '89 gts-t, 164,000 on body and roughly 60,000 on the drivetrain. Basically my car has been occasionally blowing smoke and burning a bit of oil. Original engine blew a headgasket so i bought another rb20. Ever since the new engine was dropped in its been smoking (Especially going uphill on the highway.) I was pretty sure the oil seals on the turbo were blown So i put my turbo from my old engine on. It is still smoking occasionally and at red lights i can smell burnt oil. (I know for a fact the current turbo isnt blown.) When i put the new turbo on yesterday there was oil all over the inside of the hardpiping and I bet the front mount IC is just full of oil. SO MY QUESTION IS: Is it possible that the engine is just burning off the oil that is trapped in the intercooler? The car never overheats, Just had new sparkplugs and yellow jacket coilpacks put in. Besides the oil issue the car drives great. any help is great Thanks

why not clear the intercooler of oil and see if it still smokes?
Looking for cheap parts? supguyex (Jon) is parting out his car. Good prices, good guy.

if the seals ever went in the turbo before, the oil that got into the exhaust will never leave and will always blow smoke.

If have had oil through intake, remove and check that PCV valve is not blocked by oil deposits. Same with idle valves and remove, clean inside of intercooler out (oil deposits degrade intercoolers ability to cool the air). If don't know how to clean intercooler, radiator cleaning specialist should be able to do it for you and pressure test for leaks, straighten fins, etc.

Also if have catchcan on car, sometimes that can be restrictive (some have filtering media, etc on inside) and could cause excessive pressure problem in engine which blows oil through the weakest points which are oil seals on turbo (intake or exhaust side of turbo, but usually on exhaust side from what I've noticed when boost level is raised), oilseals on engine, etc.
