  • Engine out above ? or drop below ?

So a looming dilemma for this coming winter is my engine swap .

Im trying to figure out the best way to tackle it all. Will probably be doing the work single handedly so how much experience have you guys had removing the engine/tranny out and above the engine bay ? or remove the entire subframe with engine from below ? .

I'm thinking below because i could also do the front suspension bushings , shock pillow ball mounts , completely clean and por15 the engine bay and around the frame rails .

I have a bobcat to lift the front of the car , and can get a pallet truck to drag it all out once it's disconnected .

    Any thoughts ?

i dropped the entire subframe out with it. its nice and easy not trying to angle the tranny out the top with it and allows you to refresh/inspect all your suspension components and get everything buttoned down at the same time

I've pulled an entire rb20 without tranny out the top and it was quite easy. I left the tranny in the car. Not sure about anything bigger, but it should be the same more or less. Removing the hood totally makes life really easy.

If you have a Lift go out the botom for sure. But jackstands with a good engine lift and leveler from Princess Auto HELPS so much.

Take you time to make sure the proper wiring/shifter comes out your good:P

jack the car up 2 feet, you can pull engine and tranny out no problem through the top. done this 10+ times

waaaaay faster than dropping the subframe/taking off bell housing. hood needs to be off tho

^ that would be a good way of doing it. I have done a few from the bottom but you can sometimes catch some snags if your in a rush or simply forgot to take something off. If you have a choice to from the bottom if you have some space but no hoist then just lift it the 2 feet off the ground and this would be quick too

I'm pretty meticulous about removal , i usually document and sometime photo everything so it gets re=assembled in exactly the same way. I won't be in any rush , ill have the whole winter and i have more heated workshop space than i need to get it done.

I'm favouring dropping the front subframe assembly with engine , tranny , suspension atm because i'll have the time to work on so much of it . Once i have my block built my tranny will be up for improvement so it seems logical , not to mention front bushings , shock rebuilds (btw anyone know an Endless dealer in the GTA that can rebuild Zeal functions ? ).

IF you got the ground clearance with a proper lift then drop it out the bottom. It is much easier in terms of space, but if your trying to do it with some sort of makeshift lift i would suggest going from the top.
