  • How to get my first car..... need help

so i'm 15 and live in Burlington Ontario.
so i don't have any of my licenses yet, but i would like to get a car as soon as possible. work on it after school everyday until i get my licenses. (and still work on it anyway after)

so i would like some advice on what to do, here are options i thought of:

-buy a shitty car and wait and save for a nicer car

-buying a car from japan and import it (which i do not know how to do or how it works, but i'll learn)

    -wait it out

Also, there any good import dealerships around Ontario. particularly trying to find a GTS or GT-R, 240sx, 180sx, Datsun 240 and 300zx

And is there any good sites?

I know im being general, but this is my first post, and i would just like advice to what im getting into.

We all make mistakes when we first start working on our cars or driving, let it be on something other than your current dream car, trust me.

I'll go with answer D, wait it out. I wish I did.

I joined GTRC when I was 15 too. I'm 20 now and I still dont have a running skyline. its all about priorities. if you plan on going to school, or getting some form of career/house lined up, dont bother with a money pit/build. get a civic or an accord like I have and wait til youre in a financial position to buy a JDM without it negatively affecting anything else in life.

Thanks nismo, i don't need a car yet, i would just like one to work on and have a bit of fun sometimes.
but ya, car is my priority right now, but it might change in a year or month, so ya i guess i'll just leave it for now.
well is there any good sites or nearby import dealerships? I'd still like to check them out

I'll be 18 in a couple months and I was in the same situation as you. I know I have the money for GTS-T right now to insure run and so on (I work alot) but as Oakville said above it is about priorities. Pay for school, don't buy your dream car as your first car because as sad as it is most teens will destroy there first car or right it off (speaking from experience). As soon as you fill up for the first four times or so and as soon as you start paying for insurance and maintenance you will truly understand that owning a car is alot more then just buying it and insuring it. Save up for a while, keep good driving habits, buy a civic for now, and then once you're ready go for what you want. Through the process you will learn what it really takes to own a car and how many damn hours of minimum wage it will cost to order your new JDM parts from Right Drive.

thanks man. i know im 15, i dont know basicly anything what actually goes with paying and responsibility.

I'll try and get like a CR-X when im like 17 or 18.
I just have a craving to just drive and modify something.

+1 on all of the above.

When I was young(er) I got an RX-7 FC; terrible, terrible money pit and REAL gas guzzler. In hindsight by '91 Integra was by far one of the vehicle I enjoyed the most back then.

I'm now 30+, school/family/house are taken care of and it's time to look at the JDMs again.. =D

Look at it this way: by the time you are financially stable, R34 will be affordable.

you couldnt be more wrong. you think that a r34 will depreciate in the next 10 years even tho it hasnt in the last 15? they didnt produce enough of them for them to be affordable

it's sparked my interest a bit now.
so r33 came out around 96 when i was born, so 15 years. and cost around 50,000 pounds according to top gear back then, so i would say like $90k or so.
so if r35 came out a few years ago, and i dont know how much it costs, but in 15 years time maybe the price would drop alot. maybe not.

but maybe in 15 years 32s and 33s might be near extinction. this is got me wondering now haha

Well I know you don't want to hear it, but if you're putting in any of your own money, wait until you know what you want to do career wise. You may not know what you want to be, but you could seriously do some damage if you end up wanting to go to university.

If your parents are in a position to buy the car for you (most kids in Oakville/Burlington are in this position, if their parents are still together (for the rest of gtrc)), no harm no foul. Just be smart, don't be another mark on the list of kids that have wrapped turbo RWD cars around telephone poles.

I'd still say buy a Honda or something. Learn what it is to drive and own a car, maintain it yourself and you'll feel great. I had a 1990 accord for 3 years and I learned most of what I know from doing everything myself in my garage/shop. Buying a project skyline is tough. If you have disposable income, which most kids don't in high school, you'll be ok. I bought a GTR shell when I was 18 and to this date haven't had any money to put into anything other than my daily driver civic, university and food. Being a student is not smart for building a fairly unreliable (if not done right) 20 year old sports car.

As for the pricing you bring up, after inflation the R32 sold for roughly 90,000$ in 1989 (44000$ 1989 dollars). With inflation, all skylines were sold at roughly $90,000 2012 dollars. I'd say It would take $7000 to get a shell on the road these days, depending what it needs. At least, that's what my estimates were (incl 3k for shell).

Holy hell I hate typing on an iPhone lol

And it's possible that the R32s reach the status of, say, the AE86. Where prices of them are going up as finding cleaner examples is harder. Idk about the r32/R33s, I know the r34s will be like that. Guaranteed.

Im definitely not going to university, i'm most likely to do a trade, electrician. which will cost 2-5k (which i have right now that i've saved) but my parents personally don't really want me to have a car, and if they do, they want me to buy my step sisters yaris for $10,000, which i don't have.

anyway, i don't need a car. i use my BMX to get around when i need to. So i'll just wait it out, get a CR-X, put a roof rack on it for snowboarding, get my apprenticeship in electrician, 30 years now and hopefully R35's price has come down or R32's and 33's are still around, then i'll get my dream car.

sorry for being a little off topic, but I have a better understanding now, thanks bro.

Yeah, there are some wise people 'round here... Like Oakville said, just buy a more reliable, cheaper car! You really don't need a money pit car as skylines and other JDM... I've had a clean 1997 civic for 8 years and I loved it! Customized it a lil bit, but it was no way near as expensive as a JDM. I'm 31 right now and I've been the proud owner of a 1989 skyline GTR for almost 4 years now. Back then, I didn't know what to expect from these cars. Now I know... Although it's an incredible car, it costs A LOT to build/fix...

When I was 17, I crashed my 1st car... Thinkin of it right now, glad it was a 92 mazda precidia...

By the way, my profile pic shows my civic in background (a lil dusty, but it was a 11 year old car), lol...
