  • MPG and reliability of an R32 GTST

Im 17 years old and I've found a pretty nice looking skyline for 5 grand in my area with 121,000 km. Ill be driving every day to a co-op which is about 20-30 minutes away from where I live. I will also be going to school about 30 minutes away from me next year. I've always wanted a skyline but now im a little worried on how gas millage will be (putting Shell 91 octane in) and how reliable the rb20 will be. Any and all help is greatly appreciated

Save yourself the headache and get a Honda or something practical. People in their 30's are having a near impossible time insuring these cars, and sorry to say at the age of 17 they won't only turn you down, they'll laugh as they do so. Do some searching of how many "insurance help" threads there are on this forum... believe me when I say maintaining the RB20 will be the least of your worries if you bought a Skyline.

It's the sad, sad truth... if you're set on it though, I'm sure Facility wouldn't mind you paying $800/month.

Instead of creating a worthless thread. Google it. This is all I see
On these forums now half the time. Same questions about reliability gas
Mileage yadayada. Use search function or google

Can go through 8 litres of gas quickly if on boost alot. If off boost most of the time and drive like a nana, can use hardly any gas, about as much as a 4cyl Honda (RB20DET is a 2 litre engine, just spread over 6 cylinders instead of 4, so is more reliable). But that is if your engine has a bigger turbo, where can keep off boost, fairly lean tune when off boost. With factory ECU tune it will chew more gas, as factory tend to run it rich to last the warrenty period (if intake or exhaust manifold leaks, etc, engine won't blow up). More so if engine is modified and untuned.

If want a Skyline and want to save on gas due to being a student, NA RB20DE would be best. Or catch the bus.

Reliability is how you service and drive car (applies to any car). If drive hard, don't service it properly, engine, drivetrain, brakes, etc can have problems. Also you have to take into account that sometimes it's not serviced correctly in Japan, so have to catch up on maintenance which cost's alot. Full service after buying is recommended.

With over 100,000km you're looking at cambelt, auxilaries (alternator, starter motor, etc), fuelpump, etc that need to be replaced or rebuilt. Also like most cars, check for rust, leaking window seals, etc.

I can say from experience, even when broken a Skyline can get you from A to B.

I was in your boat 3 years ago. 20 now, and VERY thankful that I didn't go this route. My 10 year old honda costs me a fair amount to run, unless you plan on dumping a very large portion of your income into your car, buy something cheap and reliable. Skylines CAN be the exact opposite.

If you are dead set on it, giv'er. Gas will be fairly expensive (full tank avgs 350-400kms, 60-70L of 91 octane from what I've been told by gts guys) and good luck finding insurance in ontario.

As a skyline owner. my best investment was buying a 10 year old honda. at 17 even a civic will be retarded on insurance for you.
a civic will get 550 to a tank easy and a fill up only costs 45 bucks which is good because by the sounds of it you will be doing a lot of driving.

I will teach you how much it costs to run and maintain a vehicle. not to mention daily driving a skyline sucks because if you want to do work on it you are left without a car ( and trust me you will want to modify it)

If you didn't research hard enough, you obviously don't want this car that badly.

buy a cheap 1.9l tdi diesel for your daily driver, have the skyline for the nice days (pays to play)

thats what i do, my 02 tdi gets 1100km/tank 65$ to fill. skyline gets maybe 450-500 and its $90+ to fill.

plus diesels cheaper 1.20/liter here in brantford!!

Man insurance blows for you guys over there. I'm paying 170 a month an that's only cuz I rolled my truck two years ago. As far as gas mileage I'm with these guys you don't buy a skyline for fuel economy, you buy it for the love of the car.
